Parent-Teachers meeting of the

Entertainment was opened with a

number was a reading by Kather
ine Knight. Hallowe'en songs were
sung by rooms four and five. The
program was concluded by the as
sembly singing from the newly
purchased song books, Mrs. Nell
west Harvey led in this concluding
number of the program.

FOR SWISS MINISTRY’S TIP
BERNE, Switzerland —The
Swiss Ministry of Finance recently
warned the public against spurious
five-frant pieces believed to come
from Italy, saying they could be
detected by a defect In the letter
“S” on the edge of the coin.
A few days later the ministry
received a letter from Genoa say
ing:
“Thanks to your kind help, our
next Issue will be Impeccable."

Stock market traders operated
cautiously In a fog of Indecision to
day, but equities generally display
ed some resistance to a continua
tion of yesterday's selling wave. At
the close prices were only moder
ately Irregular despite further
heaviness In grains. The activity
was still restricted and the turn
over approximated only 850,000
shares.
After a rather sharp sell-off at
the opening, the volume dwindled
and leading stocks regained most
of their inaugural losses ol 1 to
around 2 points. Wheat was off
about 4 cents a bushel at one time,
but later rallied. Cotton was un
certain and bonds were a trifle re
actionary. Sterling recovered mild
ly in dollar transactions, but the
gold exchanges still pointed down
ward. Germany's resignation from
the League of Nations and tne dis
armament conference apparently
was not especially disturbing.
Shares of American Telephone
finished about 1 1-2 points higher
and were only slightly lower at
their worst. Other gainers of frac
tions to around a point or more in
cluded Allied Chemical. General
Electric, Case. Deere, Standard Oil
of New Jersey, American Can,
Consolidated Gas, Public Service
of New Jersey. Wool worth. United
Aircraft. U. 8. Industrial Alcohol,
National Distillers, Goodyear and
Chrysler. U. S. Steel lost a point,
McIntyre Porcupine was down 1
1-4 and smaller declines were rec
orded by Du Pont, New York Cen
tral, Santa Pe. Alaska Juneau. Am
erican Smelting, U. S. Smelting,
Sears Roebuck, Union Pacific and
Western Union. Homestake Min
ing dropped 5 points on a few sales.
Notwithstanding mixed prices,
some stock market observers were
inclined to feel that the compar
atively small volume of liquidation
and short selling was Indicative of
a soundly Imbedded Industrial re
covery sentiment which wishes to
ignore the change in Inflatory psy
chology and Is looking some dis
tance ahead for profits.
NEW ORLEANS COTTON
NEW ORLEANS. Oct. 14.—
Cotton opened easier today al
though Liverpool was rather better
than due. The easier tone was due
to disappointment over the census
bureau's domestic consumption re
port which showed t total of 489,
486 bales consumed domestically
during September, this figure being
89,000 bales under August and only
6,700 bales more than In Septem
ber a year ago.
First trades here showed losses
losses of 2 to 4 points and the
market continued to decline after
the start until December traded at
8.06 and March at 9.29, or 7 points
below yesterday's close. The Octo
ber option now the spot month,
dropped 8 points to 8.90. Late in
the first hour the market was near
the lows In fairly active trading.
CHICAGO GRAIN
CHICAGO, Oct. 14.—t/R—Wheat
plunged down almost five cents a
bushel today In the first Instant
of trading. Talk of Important de
velopments In regard to the United
States monetary program was a
leading influence.
Wheat, com and oats all broke
the season's iow record. Opening
1 7-8 to 4 7-8 cents lower, wheat
afterward fluctuated violently
within the initial range. Com
started S-4 to 2 3-4 off, and sub
sequently recovered somewhat.

eon Bell, left for her home in
Shamrock Thursday after a two
months visit. She accompanied Mr.
Bell who will be gone several
months.
Mr. and Mrs. Swanson Reynolds
of Corpus Christl were visitors In
Pharr over the week-end at the E.
C. Whitt home.
The gravitational pull of the
new planet, Pluto, which was dis
covered in 1930, was noted long
before the planet was ever seen by
telescope.
