Church Group Has Separate Conferences The Women* Missionary society of the First Methodist church met In separate circles Monday Circle one met with Mrs George Easterly at thf church. Theiy were nine members and thre visitors. Mrs. Baughn. Mrs. Clara West^nd Mrs. John Martin, present. The devo tional was given by Mrs C. L. Hunter and chapter from the mis sion study book by Mrs. O A. Pechstein. Circle two met with Mrs. C. W. Oolgin with seven members and one visitor. Mrs. Wallace Reid, present Mia. J. H. Sample had charge of the lesson Circle three met with Mrs. I. E. Dickason with 11 members and one visitor. Mrs. Eudora Dickason Monk, of Arlington, present. Jhe lesson was given by Mrs. A. B. Niven. Circle four met with Mr* 8 C Graham with nine member* pres ent The lesson was given by Mrs. W. T. Biggs. The Young Matrons had their meeting with Mrs. Ferman Willis of Olmlto with IS members pres ent. There were two new mem bers present. Mrs A. L. Briggs and Ms. R. K. Ayers. Mrs. Sam L. Feb. 26— Among the most attractive club affairs of the season was the one given recently ir the home of Mrs. L. L. Starkey when the Twentieth Century club entertained the Junior girls. A greeting was extended by' Mrs. Hollis A. Moore, president, followed by a play directed by Mrs. C. D. Mc Coy. Those taking part in the play were Mesdames Moore. McCoy. L. & Hargrove. Brower. Miss Willie Magee was leader of the evening's program and gave a splendid review of The Jungle" by Upton Sinclair. “The Hill Country," by Ramsey Benson was very interestingly reviewed by Miss Mary Preston. "Friendship Village.” by Zona Oale was pres ented in very charming and at tractive manner by Miss Ruth Lou ise Robinson. Dr. Herman Johnson of Houston read a paper on the newer concep tion of abortion and Dr Willis, also of Houston discussed the paper. The event celebrated the birthday of George Washington, and all games played during the evening were appropriate to the occasion. One of the amusements was the tell ing by each person present of stories concerning Washington. Mr. George Bowman and Mrs. Louis Rank each gave stories that were new and very interesting. In a “-dumb auction”, Mrs Clerence H. Drea sher and Mr. Fred 81aving were awarded prises. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. J. M. George and graiiison. Mrs. Armour and Mrs Russell as co iiostcv-es. Mrs. Jewell gave a very oeautiful devotional and Mrs. Hale of Amarillo sang a delightful solo. A playlet was given by several ol the members, entitled "The Wells Our Fathers Digged, being the story of the early missionaries in pioneer days, who brought Methodism to Amenca and the hopes and alms of the present church to re-open the "wells” that these early pioners dug. The guest of the afternoon was Miss Swan. on. of the Valley Institute and a shower of vegetables, canned goods and other kitchen supplies wa* given for the Institute. There was a large attendance at the meeting. • • • The Auxiliary of the Presbyterian church met at the home of Mrs. Ver non Moore recently, for its regular meeting. A covered dish luncheon was served at noon There was an excellent attend ance at the meeting where the study book, "Planning the Good Life," was reviewed The program was in charge of Mrs. Nelle T. Key. chair man of Christian Education and Ministerial Relief, and was most Interesting and inspiring. Those who took part on the pro gram were Mesdames Helen K. Buell, C E Lamberth. L. A. Boory. The luncheon, which was served at noon, carried out a color scheme of red. white and blue, appropriate to Washington's birthday, and was a most attractive affair. The three circle chairmen. Mrs. Fred Ruste berg. Jr., Mrs W. H. Redding and Ms. Ralph L. Buell were in charge. - w - Grammar School Has P.-T. A. Conference This Past Week The grammar school P.-T. A. meeting, which was postponed from February 12. was held Wednesday afternoon in the grammar school auditorium. 3efore the business meeting Miss Melba Grasse, auditorium director, presented a program which dem onstrated what the children have been learning In their auditorium work. The first two numbers were ap propriate to the celebration of Washington’s birthday, a Virginia reel by four boys and four girls, and a minuet by two boys and two girls all dressed in colonial cos tumes. By way of contrast, the last number was a modern song. On the Good Ship Lollipop," by Joe Henry Howard. Following the program. Miss Ra chel Pierce, school nurse, address ed the meeting on school health and the necessity of co-operation between school and home. A short business session was held, and the meeting adjourned. Luncheons Are Given by New Edcouch Club (Special to The Herald! EDCOUCH. Feb. 36 — The first of a series of vanishing luncheons sponsored by the Edcouch Com munity club was given Friday aft ernoon at the home of Mrs. J. C. Sammons, with the finance com mittee, Mrs. P W. Voight, Mrs. Walter Moore. Mrs H W St John and Miss Edith Lester as hostesses. Officers and committee chairmen numbering 34 were present. The Edcouch community club was organized Jan. 38 of this year, and has for Its purpose the improve ment and beautification of the town. Temporary club rooms have been furnished in the Byrnes build ing until a community building can be erected. The beautification program calls for the planting of shrubbery on the highways and the main streets of the city. Work on the beautifi calion program is expected to get under way within the next few days. Boca Chica Trip Is Enjoyed by Scout Troop on Holiday one of the delightful events on Washington's Birthday was an all day camping trip at the beach, planned and carried out by the Bluebonnet troop of the Girl Scouts There were 26 girls in the party, accompanied by Mrs. R. H. Sundell. Mrs. E. E. Black. Mrs. Charles C. Stewart, and Mrs. P. G Hales. After the noon meal had been cooked and eaten, the weekly busi ness meeting was held. Guild Supper To Be Served Tuesday In The Parish House The Young Woman s Guild of the Church of the Advent will serve a supper at the parish house Tuesday night between the hours of & and 8 o'clock. All of the serving Is done cafeteria style, enabling patrons to select their own particular dishes. Salads and desserts are a specialty, and are particularly good. In addi tion to a menu that contains a large number of appetizing dishes, there will be enchiladas for those who care for them. . sa . The rooms were beautifully dec orated with potted plants and val entines. A delightful program consisting of a piano solo by Mrs. A. T. Tomkins, a reading by Miss Marie Hays, and a vocal solo, **1 Love You Truly," by Mrs. F. C. Scott, accompanied by Miss Louise Black mas given. A Val entine playlet directed by Mrs. Floyd Langford of Mercedes, very clever ly presented "Two Little Valentines* to Mrs. Haney. Little Ruth and Ed mund Short of Laredo, niece and nephew of the bride were dressed as Valentines. They appeared drawing a wagon In the shape of a large Val entine loaded with beautiful gifts. Scott-Roberts Nuptials Said In San Benito MERCEDES. Feb. 26 — Mrs. Bess Roberts and Mr. H L. Scott, both of Mercedes, were married Sunday noon. In San Benito, at the Presby terian church, with the Rev. Hugh Robertson, pastor of the church of ficiating. Attendants at the wed ding were Mr. and Mrs. Harry Rouse of this city. Mr. Rouse Is a brother of the bride. The bride wore a lovely blue silk crepe suit, with attached cape, lined with yellow, wd s soft yellow telt hat. The bride la the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Rouse of this city, and for several years hss been numbered among the business wo men of this city. Church Federation Meets Saturday At Church Here The Brownsville Federation of Churches met Saturday afternoon at the First Baptist church with sn excellent attendance. The Federa tion meets regularly on Friday, but due to the holiday the meeting was postponed a day.
