DEVALUATION IS EXPECTED FOR BELGIUM BRUSSELS. Belgium March 28. VP)—The government Thursday or dered the Belgian bourses to re main closed for the next three days, beginning Thursday. The order was published in a apeclal edition of the Official Chuette. There will be no quota tions of foreign exchange tn the country during the period the bourses are closed Closing of the bourses was the government’s first open step to clarify the country”* perplexing fi nancial situation. The general view is that a de valuation program will be an nounced at a Joint convocation of parliament PYiday. The ii.elusion of socialists in the newly created cabinet of Premier Paul Van Zeeland is regarded as settling the devaluation issue and leaving open, only the question of the amount and whether the belga will continue to be linked with the gold bloc or Join the sterling ranks. DEVALUATION OF 25 PER CENT EXPECTED LONDON. March 28 <AV-British financial circles viewed the an nounceemnt Thursday from Brun ei* that the bourses would be clos ed for three days as an indication the government has definitely de cided on a devaluation program and wishes to check the possibility of panicky selling. Private advices from Brussels to exchange houses here indicate the belief that devaluation will be 25 per cent. The belga weakened on the ex change market early, selling at 24.00 to the pound compared with an overnight rate of 22.38. Other gold currencies eased in sympathy with the franc, which sold at 7300 COLLAPSE OF GOLD BLOC IS PREDICTED PARIS March 28 (A*)—A col lapse of the gold bloc w'lthin a few months was feared by financiers Thursday as a consequence of the reported imminent devaluation of Belgian currency, a sudden Swiss monetary crisis, and the increasing gravity of the French money situa tion. The closing of the Belgian bourses Thursday was taken as a signal that devaluation was imminent or that the belga would be pernutted to drift. French government circles said they accepted a Belgian desertion from the gold standard as inevit able since France refused the aid which former Premier Georges fheunis of Belgium sought March 18 The refusal forced the resig nation of Theurus and his cabinet. The belga dropped on the foreign exchange Thursday from the open ing quotation of 3.24 francs to 2 90 francs, later recovering to 3.12 francs. Wednesday the belga clos ed at 3 09 francs. Switzerland's problem became suddenly acute through the report ed flight of 100.000.000 Swiss francs curing the last few days. Exchange experts said this constituted a seri oub dntin on Switzerland and was dangerous because of the tight situation of all gold bloc countries HEAD CAST Lee Tracy and Helen Mack, In the romantic leads, top the cast of the Damon Runyon-Paramount picture, "The Lemon Drop Kid.' showing Thursday only at the Queen Theatre.
