Crovoded Schools A Peril Bv OLIVE ROBERTS BARTON Sometime* it is possible to sugtest panaceas for things that need right - in* Again not. One of the latter concern* the over-crowding of schools. The chairman of the committee on education of Community Council of New York. Mr. Oeorge D. rrieu, makes the following statement: -The crowded schools will pro duce tens of thousands of pupils with anti-social complexes and re tarded emotional development, who. I with absolute certainty, will gradu ate into crime and various forms of Insanity and emotional Instability. During the next 20 years a large per centage will be public charges In criminal institutions and hospitals for the insane.” Conditions of over-crowding are more acute in some places, of course, than others, but it is true that in hundreds of cities large and small over the country there has been no money to care for natural expansion. Cliases Are Overcrowded In some cases where whole build ings have been closed and the pu pils transferred to distant schools, taachers have had to do the best thev could with classes nearer a hun dred than the average of fifty, which Is about the limit of anyone s ca pacity to direct and teach. When this condition exists two things naturally follow. First of all, a certain type of group or mob psy chology takes hold. Children are quick to see when matters are out of control. The other Is that children, acting as individuals In classes of limited numbers, lose Incentive to study In mass formation To say nothing about the driven teacher herself who. under such circumstances, must feel hopelessly beaten and discour aged. In schools where pupils can attend only half sessions, to make room for the over-flow the other half of the day. conditions are still worse. They are running loose on the streets This Is the actual cause of the crime tendency mentioned by Mr Frleu. Mot Practical In Cities offer no panacea for the situa tion. and what I have in mind would not affect the large city school In the least But this little suggestion, s hang-over from the fresh-aid fiend days, may be workable in a suburban or country community to a certain extent, now that spring is hare. Abroad the out-of-door school Is more popular than here In the Unit ed States, especially in countries where weather permits them much of the year. At that there have been established certain therapeutic schools from time to time In lati tudes so cold the small patients had to sit out under the skies In “sleep ing bags Which goes to show that an idea Is often workable under the most adverse condition!. What Is learned In the open air Is retained 90 per cent, m> it has been proved The lift to morale Is re markable also. Sometimes I wonder why we are so wedded to walls and windows when there Is so much free spare going to waste outside. Teachers Still a Problem Of course, this method does not help with the problem of more teachers And there would be days when weather would not permit any al fresco study. But here and there the idee may be usable just because it looks so very Impossible. Things sometimes work out that way. As for crowded city schools, per haps the dire results predicted by Mi Frleu may be milder than he Jfcmks My own reaction Is that low xwed home standards are a still more lately menace to child welfare and mental stability. Let us hope with prayer that conditions improve mightily enough In the next few years to reclaim those little under privileged ones already damaged It s Time To Clean Up On Cosmetics f _______ By ALICIA IlRBT REA Service Staff Writer Spring housecleaning In the name of beauty Is a very Important pre Easter task Indeed. This Is tho time when you should use up your odds and ends of cosmetic preparations, make a list of items you 11 need, and then, keening an eye out for sales and sneclal offers, gradually begin to replenish your stock. Don't buy a lot of unnecessary supplies that you know perfectly well you’ll never have time to use. You must have the four essentials, of course, and whatever makeup you generally put on your skin. Aside from these, there’s nothing you need except maybe one or tg;o special creams or lotions to correct an individual defect. Choose the four essentials care- : fully The eleansing cream should be a light-textured variety that will melt the minute it is applied. CHILDREN EGG ELDERS INTO EASTER PREPARATIONS | ___ Marshmallows are used to form the rabbits that decorate the green lawn-resembling Icing of this gala Eas ter cake. The ears are cut from paper Right: If yau wont want to dye eggs for Easter, decorate them with colorful cellophane ribbon as an alternative. Wet the ribbon to make It pliable and it will stick to the eggs without trouble. Leave both ends free to ti; after winding around eggs. By MART E. DAGUE I NEA Service Staff Writer Next to Christmas. I always got my biggest thrill-of-the-year at Eaater. when I was a child, especial ly If the day dawned bright and clear and I could scramble over the yard and garden looking for those care fully prepared treasures of dyed eggs and gaudy cand lee. Children haven’t changed much through the years — which is why I put myself out no end to make Easter Just as thrilling as possible for my family, and feel amply repaid by the shrill screams of delight that make fur ther sleep impossible. Aside from the conventional dytnc of eggs, and their decoration with those fascinating decalcomanla transfer pictures, the most exciting trick you can do to make the egg hunt a success is to Inscribe thr hunter's name on It. To do this hardboil white eggs and dye with i light colored dyes Write Name With Wa* Now dip a stub pen into melted wax or parafin and write the name on the egg with wax. When the wax I hardens dip egg Into a dark col : ored dye which has been cooled A hot dye would melt the wax The name appears In the color the egg was first dyed against a background of the las? dye. If you have egg shells that have been cracked and emptied at the small end. the egg can be filled with tiny eggs or Jelly beans. After rins ing and drying, the shell should be dyed taking care that no dye gets inside the shell. After thorough dry ing the shells are filled with candy The uncolored end with the hole Is covered with gay paper of a con trasting dolor, pasted firmly over the hole to keep the candles in The ends of the paper are fringed and twisted. When you choose baskets for the egg hunt be sure they are reasonablv strong. It’s a tragedy for the handle to pull out of the basket, turning the precious Easter eggs into ill-fated Humpty-Duropttes. For the Easter party, refresh ments may be very simple — ice cream and cake with hot choccJate ! Serve them first, then suppers won't be spoiled by something to eat late in the afternoon. You never know how hard It Is to follow that rule until you have lived in a large city and been pushed and shoved and trodden on by people who are all going somewhere in a great hur ry, and who give you “dirty looks” if you happen accidentally to brush them. What revelations we get of our selves or others, in trying momenta. How quickly and completely tem pers are lost and are shed our good manners more easily by far than we do our elothes at the close of day. Nerves are rubbed raw by all sorts of conditions at work, school, and home, and self-control goes to the w Ids when tried too far. I s amazing, however, to aeb how a perfectly courteous, controlled per son gets along in the world. Hard, cold, indifferent folk soften to them. Courtesy seems to oil all the ma chinery of life and make it run smoothly and quietly. It is laugh able at times to see a person whose nerves are on edge and who is ready to snap at the drop of a hat. soften when the courteous one utters a sin cere. earnest. They do you no particular good and are not important.
