Art Teacher Is Honored At Reception (Special to The Herald) HARLINGEN. July 2.—Anthony De Young of San Antonio, national ly known artist and art instructor, who has conducted a two-week’s summer art class in Harlingen, sponsored by the Rio Grande Valley Art League, was honored at two delightful social affairs given dur ing the weekend. First of these was a studio tea given Friday afternoon in McAllen by the upper Valley branch of the Art League and marked the open ing of the McAllen Studio of Art. Mr. De Young addressed the mem bers and guests on the subject of • Modem Art". Saturday evening. Mr De Young and members of his art class were honored guests at an informal re ception given at the Woman's build ing by the Art League. A feature of the evening was the exhibit of more than 100 plantings, work of t pupils during the two weeks of s period. Ruth Townsend and Lou Evelyn Brindley also in Spanish costume, served j,unch in the patio where, colored lights and gay streamers overhead and the soft strains of Mexican music gave added Span- j lsh atmc phere. A gift it blue Mexican glassware | was presented Mr. De Young and i also an honorary membership in the Rio Grande Valley Art League j Approximately 30 were enrolled in the class and so successful was I the project, according to Mrs. J. J.! Murray, president of the Art League that Mr. De Young agreed, at the I unanimous request of artists of the i Valley, to return in the fall for a one-day conference monthly. Mr. De Young, who has made his home In Texas since 1929. is a mem ber of the leading associations of painters m America, has been rep resented in many of the important exhibits of the middlewest and his works have received numerous re wards. That Mr. De Young is regarded .ghly as an art instructor is shown ft his record as teacher in a num ber of the leading art schools of Chicago and the midwest and Val ley artists consider it an opportun ity to have advantage of his con tinued instruction and criticism. -n News, Notes Of Del Mar (Special to The Herald) DEL MAR, July 2—Mr and Mrs Pen Woods of Weslacc, were at Del Mar Beach this week, for several days. Mr. and Mrs. R 8 Lightner and family of Mission, visited at Del Mar this week. Dr. and Mrs. Sherwood and daugh ter. Caroline, of Temple, arrived Sunday to spend the week at Del Mar cottages. Dr. Sherwood is con nected w’lth the King and White Clinic at Temple. Mrs. W O Browne and Mrs. Ollen Rome and families of Mission, en jcyed a three-day stay at Del Mar cottages. Harry A. Kessell and family of Brownsville enjoyed several days at Del Mar this week. B. B. Line and party of Weslaco enjoyed several pleasant days at Del Mar cottages this week Mrs. C C. Bryant and party of Harlingen spent several days at Del Mar Beach resort this week. Mr and Mrs J. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Moses of Donna spent Thursday and Friday at Del Mar Beach Rescrt Mr. T. E. Vessels and family of San Antonio arrived Friday to spend a week. Mr. and Mrs. K. Windeiker of Karnes City, enjoyed several days at the beach, arriving Friday. Mr and Mrs. M E. Barhar of San Juan arrived Friday to spend three days at Del Mar cottages. Mr and Mrs. C. S. Eidman of Brownsville enjoyed the week end at Del Mar. Miss Mable Humble and party en joyed the week end at Del Mar Beach Resort. They are from San Benito. Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Koont* and family of San Benito enjoyed the week end fishing at Del Mar -o. Return I (From the Scout Reporter) The Girl Scouts are home from Camp Perry with a healthy coat Oi tan and happy memories of the days spent there last week. Fifteen gills from Brownsville were present under the leadership of their cap tain, Mrs. P. G. Hales, and camp committee member. Mrs. R, D. Sundell. Troops from Harlingen. San Benito and Los Fresnos brought the number of Girl Scouts regis tered at camp to 50. Each day, from reveille to retreat, was filled with various activities, such as fire building and cooking out of doors, nature study, boating and swimming and other things. Each evening all troops gathered in the bowl around a blazing camp fire for star gazing, dramatics and singing. Woolsey. -o Arthora Hipp Is Honoree On Her Fourth Birthday Arthora Hipp. small daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur C. Hipp. was honored Monday morning between the hours of 8:30 and 10:30, at her home when her mother enter tained, the occasion being the honorees fourth birthday. Diversion during the social hours included the breaking of the “pi ftata”. Colorful baloons were given as favors to the small guests. A refreshment course was also serv ed. Mr. and Mrs. Myer left Immediate ly liter the ceremony on a wed ding trip to Los Angeles, the state of Washington and Colorado. They will be at home to their friends in Houston after the first of August. The marriage will claim a great deal of interest here and in other parti of the Valley where Mrs My er has a great many friends Mrs. Myer has been both an athletic and academic instructor in the Browns ville school system for several years. Mrs. Myer for a time was super visor of playground activities in the school system, and was one of the mcwt popular teachers In the sys tem at the time of her resignation in the late spring. Mrs. Hall Is Honor Guest For Affair A delightful social event erf Sat urday afternoon was the informal party at the home of Mrs. Randall Mathers, given by members of the Self-Culture club, honoring one of tiielr members, Mrs. Marvin Hall, who leaves soon to make her home in Austin. Large bowls of vari colored dahlias made colorful the rooms given over to the affair. Miss Kathryn Worley sang very delightfully a pleasing group of songs, "Until” by Sanderson, "The Last Rose of Summer," Moore, and The End of a Perfect Day,” by Bond. An original verse, fitting the occasion, and by one of the club members, was sung by the club members to the tune of “The Eyes of Texas.” At the close of the song, a gift was presented Mrs. Hall by Mrs. Homer Pitch. July 10 at 2 p. m. The oontest and round-up will be for class one and two wardrobe demonstrators, and all co-operators who have made foundation pat terns in any year of their club work. Prizes in the demonstrators’ div ision for first place in both classes one and two will be trips to the short course. Prises for second place In both classes win ba merchandise.
