MUST STAND TO THE RACK.
Politicians Trying to Crowd Mr
Jones Out, Says the Herald.
9,aurens Herald.
Petitions are circulating in Charles
ton for signatures, preparatory t(
holding an election in that city an<
'county for voting out the dispensary
There are five thousand qualified vo
ters in Charleston county, and it wil
be necessary to procure the signa
- tures of thirteen hundred of thes<
S:Qualified voters before an election car
'be called. It really matters very little
however, to the balance of the stat<
what. Charleston concludes to do it
the matter, as she has been a lam
unto herself, as regards the dispen
sary, ever since the law was inaugu
r-atcd. But speaking of the dispensar:
question brings up several feature!
'which it might be well to consider
.and one of them is, why has thii
dight been so suddenly inaugurate(
against the dispensary in certain bor
<der counties? and why 'has it beer
-done just at this particular time? 0
course the average, unsuspecting vo
ter will be told that there is no poli
cal significance in the matter-jus
simply a religious and moral upris
ing again,,t the dispensary! But thi
cel political significance of the mat
-ter is that the politicians that hav4
been trying to get office on any ol(
platform have ridden so many differ
.ent kinds of horses in their races foi
the various offices in the past, an<
'have -so completely played all point:
-of the political compass, that -thel
irealize what a strange, inconsisten
rposition they have put themseves in
in spreading their sails to catch ever:
-political breeze that blew, that thi
game these politicians are now play
-ing is to get rid of the dispensar!
-issue in the coming campaign, for thi
-very expedient reason that such at
issue would show them up in som<
-other light than that of consistency.
For a candidate to stand for offic4
-n fte dispensary platform, who ha
in the past I _en a candidate on thi
iprohibition or high license platform
-would look very much like he is try
--ing to get office in any way and o1
-any kind of platform that offered
-that office was what he wanted, an
,it mattered not how much demagog:
Ie ihad to resort to to get it. W,
<4on't believe, however, that the pea
ple will be deceived by such politic
-that some are resorting to, for whe1
stheir political true inwardness i
fathomed, it will be seen that their ef
forts are simply a piece of shrew
rbut inconsistent politics to crowd ou
'some honest, conscientious prohibi
ttion candidate. For example, thi
unanner in which the papers, general
11y, -Eroughout the state have receive<
'the -announcement of the candidac:
'of Mr-. A. C. Jones, is sufficient t<
-shiow that, althoug.h these paper
~avere loud and fulsome in their prais
:n'd -advocacy of the candidacy o
prdliibifion aspirants in the past, the:
now almost ridicule Mr. Jones's can.
didacy. This is not done because thel
are topposed to "prohibition" as
arreaiis o'f -getting the dispensary ou1
edf-the way, 'but because they want tc
get:Mr. Jones out of the way, in orde:
'to mnakce smooth the path of somi
<other candidate who is willing to car
-ry wate- on -both shoulders or t<
tstraddle the question in its ever:
-'phase. We are not an advocate o
'Nr. Jones's candidacy, but like to se<
fair play and consistency on the pari
of those holier-than-thou politicianx
w:ho pretentd to be so honest, con
.scien,tious and indifferent to politica
-expediency Mr. Jones is a fair-mind.
--ed man and will prove a fair and hon
-est competitor for governor: and wi
-would like to see the question of pro
hibition and dispensary fought to
finish in the next campaign, and Mr
:jones owes it to the honest, conscien
tious prohibitionists to remain in the
field and make the fight for a princi
pie rather than retire in the interes1
of anti-dispensary politicians who are
not now and never have been pro
hibitiorists at heart, but are only
seeking to restore to private partie!
