NEAR LY,1LNG AT ABBEVILLIE
rowd Storms Jall, Takes Alleged In
sul er of Young Woman.
Abbevil'le Aug. 18.-Bob Davis, col
red, ha a narrow escape from lynch
ng, at the hands of a mob here to
ight, s -the result of an alleged in
a d improper proposal made to a
youn lady from the cotton mill vil
tead of lynching the negro, after
g him from the jail, he was sub
ed to other punishment. He is said
o have confessed his guilt.
The facts in the case, as understood
ere, are as follows:
About 2 o'clock today a young lady,
m the cotton mill village, was on
way up-town, when she was ac
d by a negro man and grossly
insulted. An improper proposal was
made and the negro made an indecent
xposure of his person in her pres
nce. She ran and reported the mat
er to her father and the hunt began.
Davis was finally arrested, charged
th being the guilty party, and lodged
,n jail. While he was not fully identi
fied, little doubt was felt that he was
the guilty party. It developed during
the investigation that he had been an
noying two other ladies recently. The
-crowd which gathered was already ex
cited, and this increased the excite
mdent
About 9 o'clock tonight a large
-crowd, armed with guns, congregated
-on the public square, but it was not
thought 'that any attempt would be
made to storm the jail. However, at
about 10.30 o'clock the crowd stormed
the jail, broke in the outer door, two
-inner doors, broke in the cell where
the prisoner was and took him from
the jail. He was taken out of town,
and in about one-half hour a volley of
-shots was fired, indicating 'that the
negro had been lynched. This proved
not to be the case, however. Sheriff
Lyon is absent in Columbia. The city
police and other oflicers did what they
.ould to protect the prisoner, but to
vail.
CRUSHED HIS VICTIM'S SKULL
Aiken County Man Also Charged With
.Firing Three Buildings.
Aiken, Aug. 18.-Three buildings
re burned to the ground and' a.negro,
Ike. Sanders, lies at the point of death,
~th his skull crushed to a-' pulp, as
e result of a wild outbreak which oc
rred about 9 o'clock last night on
e place of Mr. Morgan Holley, some
n or fifteen miles south of here.
Sanders, it seems, had gone to the~
ome of one Lee about dark, and they~
ad been sitting on the steps talking
na friendly manner when Lee went
o the wood pile, gathered an armful
f lighitwood and with an axe entered
e house, turned dpon the unsuspect-I
g Sanders and struck him three rapid
nd terrific blows mthe back of the
ead with the axe. Lee's wife scream
and cried for help and her husband
ttacked her. Dragging her into the
rd, he rained blows on her with a:
vy stick and ended by brutally
ashing>her to the ground, but she
rose and fled. Lee then proceeded to
re three houses in rapid succession
nd made his -escape and has not yet
een caught.
It seems that Lee is a slow witted
ellow, and that some of his neighbors:
ad taken advantage of this fact to
*mproperly invade his home, Sanders,
't seems, openly boasting of the fact.
he acondition of affairs eventually
awned upon Lee, with the result he
undertook to revenge himself on the
upposed guilty parties.
AL INVESTIGATION CONTINUES.

he State laboratories, to determine'
whether or not the corn products now
being sold in Columbia are spoiled and
dangerous for food. An investigation
conducted here several days ago show
ed beyond doubt that spoiled meal was'
being sold to Columbians, to be con
sumed as corn meal, hominy and in
other ways, and these two inspectors1
have orders to take samples from
every retail and wholesale grocery
store in Columbia and submit them to
chemical analysis.
Awaiting Results of Analyses.
It will be several days yet before
the reports on the analyses can be
had, and until that time there will be
no way of finding just what percen
tage of the corn products sold in Co
however, that quite a considerable
quantity of the stuff which has been
shipped here in the past two or three
days has been held on the sidings with
out unloading, until the results of the
analyses can be had. Commissioner
Watson and a number of the whole
sale merchants of the city are waiting
upon the results of the analyses be
fore taking definite action.
The report of the special inspector,
who left Thursday morning to look
into the source of this corn supply at
the manufacturing plants, is expectedl
probably Saturday. All these manu
facturers whose goods have been
found to be impure, so far, are of oth
er States, but the sale of such matter
being a violation of the federal laws,
Commissioner Watson will be able,
should he decide to do so, to bring
very unpleasant prosecution against
them.
One Manufacturer Promises.
Commissioner Watson was Thurs
day afternoon and night in conference
with one of these manufactur-rs, wno
came here for that purpose immediate
ly upon hearing of the chemists re
ports on the corn meal. This manu
facturer is one who supplies a large
part of the South Carolina trnd.> in
corn products. It is zted that he has
made a prom-"e to establish at 's
mill, laboratories, etc., sufficient to
make tests to find out if the corn he
uses is up to the standard, and left
Thursday night to begin steps in that
direction Friday morning.
JUSTICE'S BULLET HITS LADY.
Row in Spartanburg Over Drought Ef.
fects Terminates Seriously.
Spartanburg, S. C., Aug. 18.-Thomp
son & Dillard's store, on Morgan
square, one of the largest in the city,
was the scene this afternoon of a fight
between Magistrate T. 0. Fowler, of
Reidville, -and Robert G. Gibbs, a far
mer of Switzer, in the course of which,
after the men had battered each oth
ers' faces with their fists and been
separated, Magistrate Fowler drew, a
revolver and fired four times, missing
Gibbs, .but wounding Mrs. Jones F.
Thompson, a saleslady, and breaking
a showcase and a plate glass window.
The quarrel started in an argument
over the effect of the drought on the
crops. Mrs. Thompson had a narrow
escape. The bullet struck her in the
breast, but was deflectied from its
course by a corset stay and inflicted
only a flesh wound. The nervous
shock is more serious than the injury.
Both men wer arrested by the police,
but released under bond. Fowler was
then re.arrested on a warrant sworn
out by Gibbs, charging assault and bat
tery .with intent to kill. He waived.
a preliminary investigation and gave
bond for trial at the general ses3io:-s
court. Fowler's excuse for the 9:1ot
iPg is self-defence. Gibbs adi.nits he
drew a knife, but says he did not do
so until Fowler produc*ed the revolver.
