PARKER CHAIRMAN j OVER NEBRASKAN BRYAN BEATEN IN ( LOSE AND EX ? 'x * r?i n ni (TliMi CU3 1'?91. Chance of Nomination Less?Various Combinations Rumored?Counter Claims. t Baltimore, June 25.?William J. Bryan met defeat at the hands of the " 1:~ 1 Aftnxranti/Mi to uemourauc vuu^uvtvu day, and in the opinion of many of the party leaders here, eliminated himself from the rate for the presidential nomination. The vote by which former Judge Alton B. Parker, of New York, was elected temporary chairman over Mr. Bryan?579 to 510?was interpreted tonight in many ways. The Champ Clark ' - ' ? * inofiAn adherents are claiming ms liunnua uuii and many believe today it would either be Speaker Clark or a dark horse." Talk of Mr. Bryan has not ceased by any means. Some of his friends say today's vote was no test and that many of his most ardent supporters -were compelled by circumstances to Tote against him as temporary chairjnan. They claimed, on the other hand, that the vote of 510 given to Mr. Bryan ? indicated that he had a '"veto" power in the convention which put him in ~'J~'? ~* JnmmaK o o rn n'hfi A POSlliOII Ui UVluiuovc cio w ?? v should be the nominee. Clark Forces Manoeuvre. Many of Speaker Champ Clark's delegates openly threw their support to -the anti-Bryan forces. This was regarded as opening a breach between tke speaker and the former nominee, which may cause the Bryan supporters to make a bitter fight on Clark. Taken from another standpoint the ote of so many of the (JiarK aanerents for Judge Parker was interpreted as a, distinct bid for the support of the conservative element in the convention. This conservative element, it may he stated, practically is prepared to accept a radical or progressive candidate. They frankly admit to name a conservative or so-called reactionary would strengthen Col. Theodore Roosevelt in his organization of a third party. This the leaders are anxious to avoid. Bryan's Last Opportunity. Those who argue against the probability of Mt. Bryan being named de-| ho his sav in the conven- I tioa today and failed to stampede it Mr. Bryan frequently was interrupted in his remarks and it was regarded j as doubtful tonight whether he would another hearing on any issue involving himself. Mr. Bryan claimed the right to speak today on the ground that in three : ^ ~ 1 nnmncii or 110 ho haH hOTTIP yrtAlUCUiiai vaiu^ui^uuv. aloft the banner of Democracy as its gg presidential nominee. Now that the fruits of victory were at hand he said ke should not be denied an opportunity to rejoice with his party. The Democratic party, "a pillar of fire by ! sight for the plain people," now that the dawn has come should, he declared, be made a "pillar of clouds by day." Party Not on the Block. Mr. Bryan made another point which elicited unbounded enthusiasm from fefts hearers. He said the sinister in fluences which had been at worn in the Republican national convention at Chicago were operating even more brazenly at Baltimore. But, he added, the Democratic party could not be run fey the "Ryans <>r bought by the BelTOonts." SSit ?ryan plainly was under stress . as her ma<fe h!<s plea to the convention ? ? x Wo 11 ctpodt iiitpr. W lUiii uuvt a lut; ! Jot Sought by Parker. In behalf of Judge Parker it was later stated that as he had not sought She office at the hands of the national committee and had taken no part in the fight, he felt he had no right to Wiinaraw. Mr. Bryan left the convention hall by a rear entrance soon after the rote on the temporary chairmanship TV as announced and resumed confer ences in his rooms. Tonight he said: "The. vote in the convention shows the. attitude of the convention and my speech shows my views on the subject. ; I have 110 statement to make. I wait | developments without impatience. I j do not know of anything that needs to I 1 3 J 3 ?* j De auueu. The Xebraskan did not attend the night session of the convention to hear Judge Parker's speech, but remained in his rooms to attend to correspondence and confer with friends. Later Mr. Bryan purposed joining in the deliberations of the platform committee. The first session of the convention, which marked the defeat of Mr. BryJan, was noisy and disorderly. It be gan with every one apparently in the best of humor, but soon after the opening prayer, by Cardinal Gibbons, the lines between Bryan and anti-Bryan forces tightened almost to the breaking point. Mr. Bryan was given an enthusiastic greeting, both from the floor and the galleries, when he made his first appearance and began his speech of protest against Judge Parker. He had not proceeded far, how ever, before interruptions began, mis was a signal for further disorder. Kern Badly Treated. Sen. Kern was accorder treatment even less courteous and ihence forward 110 man who faced Th3 convention was safe from catca'ls, hisses and noises. The hubbuo grew to such au extent that when .Judge Parker had been elected and ^scor'ed to the i-iatform to make his "keynote" speech, the disorder was so great that a recess was taken until 8 o'clock tonight, I when he resumed his discussion of party principles and his denunciation of the Chicago Republican convention, as one of the most disgraceful exhibitions in the political history of the j country. !
