No one can come to Manning and not be impressed with the town's growth. There is no boom about it, but it is a solid steady growth, with a strong de mand for mo~re houses. The seven year old son of Mr. Judson Bradham, of Greeleyville was acci dentally given morphine instead of cal omel last Thursday, which caused its death in a short while. Manning has made one or two efforts to grganize a second .bank, and now another attempt is being made, with a] fair promise of success. Those who are interested in the second bank move ment believe a second bank in this place will increase business and be a paying investment. There is no an tagonistic spirit towards the present bank,as there cannot be any just ground for complaint. The present bank is well officered and serve the public well, but the projectors of the new institution believe that there is room for another institution of the kind, and if managed] upon business principles, the increased banking business done here will make both anspay. We are informed the new bank proposed to have a capital of *25,000, the major of wh-ich has already been subscribed, and il the charter is applied for, it will begin operation in time for the present ifal business. We would call our readers attention to an advertisment in these columns from the Dr. D. 0. Rhame drug store in Summerton. Dr. Rhame is the founder of a first class drug business in that -progressive community, and like all men of true metal, opposition acts upon him as an exhilarant.. We do not think that we over state it, when we say that Rhame's drug store is the equal of any similar iustitution in large towns. Anything in the drug and med icine line can be found there, com pounded by only first class pharmacists, and are ever ready to serve with a corps of attendants. His store besides carrying a full and complete line of medicines, also handles fine toilet goods, perfumes. fancy goods, fine candies and everything that can be found in any first class drug store in a city. Dr. Rhame has built up a magnificent business, by his thrift and unswerving integrity, and the readers of this newspaper no, doubt have been impressed with his intelli gent and forceful manner Qfadvertis ig. I COTT(Y-i & BOWNE, Cherrists, . '-'Parl Street, New York. SOME QUEER NOTIONS. Odd Beliefs About Animals Tha Were Held by Our Ancestors. Our respected ancestors had som queer notions in regard to natural hi, tory. Old Sir Thomas Browne, in hi "Inquiries Into Vulgar and Commo: Errors," discusses many of these. "Tha a brock or badger hath the legs on on side shorter than on the other," h says, "though an opinion perhaps no very ancient, is yet very general." Thi belief was received not only by thec rists, but by most of those who hai daily orportunity to behold and hun them: yet Sir Thomas could not ac cept this belief, because it seemed "n easy affront into reason and generall; repugnant unto the conrse of nature. Wherever he looked he saw that th limbs of animals on the opposite side of their bodies were of the same lengt and number and that none of them ha< an odd leg. One would think that th question might have been put beyon cavil by simply measuring the limb of the animal, but perhaps they neve thought of that The worthy knight, however, couli accept the basillsk, though It does no seem that be ever saw one and did no question its power to kill by "inflictin its eye," as old Dr. Parr would hay expressed it, upon its enemy. Ani why not? "For if plagues or pestiler tial atoms have been conveyed in th air from difterent regions, if men at : distance have infected each other, i the shadows of some trees be noxious if torpedoes deliver their opium at i distance and stupefy beyond them selves, we cannot reasonably deny," hi says, "that there may proceed fror subtler seeds more agile emanation which contemn those laws and invad at distance unexpected." But ther, was a limit to the credulity of Si Thomas, and as for the generation o the basilisk, that "it proceedeth fron a cock's egg hatched under a toad or., serpent," he thought it a conceit a: monstrous as the brood itself.-Fores and Stream. PITH AND POINT. It may be hard to be good-it is no hard to be kind. Genius has always received more ap plause than money. Presumption lies at the bottom o much that we call success. It requires no strength of mind t6 bi mean-it does to be generous. True greatness lies not in never fall ing, but in rising every time we fall. Keep your business to yourself o: some other fellow will keep it for you. The public is a baby, dependinj largely upon the nature of the indul gence of its nurse. The higher a balloon rises the small er it looks, and is this not true of man: ambitious members of society? Failure in life is not loss of capita or the catastrophe of a business ven ture. Such things are accidents tha may happen to all.-Schoolmaster. A Costly Mistake. Blunders are sometimes very expen ie. Occasionally life itself is the pric f a mistake, but you'll:1ever be wron, if you take 'Dr. King's New Life Pill for Dyspepsia, Dizziness, Headache iver or Bowel troubies.
