The approach of Halley'e Comet is watched for with eagerness by all but when you hear eeme one say that he has actually seen it with the naked eye you can give hira the horse high. He has seen the morning star, which in his imagination, has grown wonderfully. But the Comet is eoming as the following dispatch from Washington shows: "Halley's comet was seen here today for the first time of its present visit, those favored with this primary view being Professor Asappall of the naval observatory aud his associate^ It was about 4.30 o'clock in the morning when through the big 26-inch telescope at the observatory they obtaiued a sight of the wanderer of the heavens which for the past tnree quarters of a century has - - - - - -1 been hidden rrom ine eyas uj. m? inhabitants on this globe. For about fifteen minutes the comet remained visible. In about three weeks, the comet will be visible to the naked e.ye, it will riee two hours and forty minutes before the sun. Today it came up ati hour ahead of the great luminary. The comet therefore will be visibe for a longer period each day, although those who wish to see it will be obliged to rise early. "Popular apprehension regard ing harm to the earth and its inhabitants during the visit of the comet to this portion of the Universe is unfounded. In a statement issued tonight, Willis L. Moore of the weather bureau says, that the result of a collision between the earth and a comet would depeud upon the mass of the comet, the velocity of the bodies and the angle of i?* nact. but that in the present case a collision would be impossible owing to a safety margin of some 13,000,000 miles between the earth and the comet. "The tail of the comet, through which the earth probably will pass, will be noticeable as an absolutely harmless luminous gas or dust. It may produce electrical and magnetic elects that can be detected only by self-recording instruments." -j? They Want What They Want When They Want It.
