The best way to drive out the sa loons is for the people to quit pat ronizing them. ' Some men always talk big, even when indulging In small talk. Kan sas City Times. "Fake reformers" is what the- or gan of the old Republican gang at Santa Fe now calls Governor Hager man and his supporters. in wSiat you write, of course you must . depend Upon elegant - diction and grammatical construction to get a hearing. You can't avoid "the conventional lies of civilization. We are all guil ty newspaper men, preachers and doctors, as well as lawyers, politicians and real estate .men. The main object in working for statehood is to secure good govern ment that is to say government by the people of the Territory. Better have good government without state hood than statehood without good government. That fifteen year old Chicago boy who was yesterday sentenced to the reformatory for life, probably was a diligent reader of the "Nickel Libra ry" the printing and sale of which does more harm perhaps than both whiskey and cigarettes. The Record believes that high lie ense and strict regulation is-for the present the only practical solution of the saloon question. Morally of course this is a truce with the devil, but it enables the hosts of the Lord to hold the trenches while pushing for ward the work of capturing the whole worksr "The .way Governor Frantz secur ed equitable freight rates for Okla homa was to go to work - and get them. Kansas City Times. J After they get through house-clean ing, perhaps Governor Hagerman and i Attorney General Reid will under-! take something inthat line for New ' Mexico. - For once the Santa Fe New Mexi can is right. It is true that the Dem-' ocratic papers of the Peeos Valley: are "figuring that in three years New Mexico will be overwhelmingly Dem ocratic," and they are willing to wait even longer than three years to bring the Territory into the Union as a Democratic state. As a friend of Attorney General Reid, the Record believes that he should resign his position as attor ney for the Pecos Valley and North eastern railroad. It may place him In an embarrassing position should it become necessary for the Territory to proceed against the railroads to secure equitable rates. FIFTEEN YEAR OLD BOY SENTENCED FOR LIFE Chicago, Dec. 19. Robert Gordon, aged 15, was today sentenced to the reformatory for life, after pleading guilty to the charge of murdering Jo seph Reed, aged 8. Gordon pulled Reed under a sidewalk, pounded him on the head with a brick until he was unconscious, and then dug a hole in the earth in which he burled him, allowing him to suffocate. If the "Parson" caught a boy of his taking a drink of whiskey, he would try to reason with the boy but if he caught the youngster smok ing a cigarette or reading a copy of the "Diamond Dick" series, the Par son would certainly use a trunk strap or anything else that happened to be handy. It is easy to find a stenographer capable of repairing the grammar, spelling and other mere mechanical appliances of writing, if you nave anything to say. If there is nothing CATHOLICS RESIST THE POLICE IN FRANCE Nantes, France, Dec. 19. Considera hie rioting attended the evacuation of the chapel, palace and seminary here today. Crowds of Catholics overcame the police, who were compelled to draw their revolvers and under threats of opening fire keep back the mob until rescued by troops. Several women were arrested for striking or biting soldiers. An Anti-Saloon Campaign.
