A young Kansas bride was told she had a model husiband. The day after she was married, she looked in the dictionary and found that "model' was defined as "a small imitation of the teal thing." An exchange says a colored citizen was brought before a police judge charged with stealing chickens. He pleaded guilty and received sentence. Then the judge asked himxhow he had managed to lift those chickens right under the window of the owner's house-, when there was a dog loose in the yard. "Hit wouldn't be no use, .Tiidee" said the negro, "to try to 'splain this thing to yo all. Ef yo' was to understand it you like as not would get your hide full of shot, an' get no chicken nuther. "The man that brings things to pass -is the man who keeps a cool head under difficulties and directs his men with precision. Such a man will clear up difficulties on a busy day and - go home at night care-free and happy; whereas, the hurrying " man labors in feverish anxiety until late at night, then plods his weary way home, where he carries an atmos phere of depression and darkens the radiance of love's' own beam. There he passes a sleepless night, and in the morning rushes back to accom plish a hopeless task. Thus his days and nights pass in a ceaseless round of crude endeavor, and the circling years only add to his life's bitterness. Trade Review (Dallas). The two dangers between which an editor steers with difficulty are of an opposite character. The one tendency is to withdraw from the merely hum an activities of the world and dwell in a mental reservation, spinnin geometrical, spider-webs of imagina tion from a self-centerd viewpoint This leads to preaching and the estab lishment of special columns for ex ploiting various absurd notions born of too much introspection. Reporters and active news writers are not great ly tempted in this direction. They are more exposed to the oth-Jr serious temptation that .bests the editor. This one leads to an intense personal int erest in petty and trivial" affairs, such as ward politics, the nomination of candidates for school directors, the quarrels 'between rival office-seekers, etc., in short a general disposition to mix in any sort of a scrap that de velops, whether in politics, religion, education or business. Somewhere about halfway between these two temptations lies the proper course for an editor. The reporter has his troubles out with people, face to face, the very next day and is too busy to remember such incidents. However, it does no good to cuss either an editor or a reporter ibehind his back for three out of the five men you are talking to will telephone to' the newspaper office or call in per son within -an hour, and make what you said so much worse that you are forever afterward blacklisted. A daily newspaper. is manufactured on the run, and has to, depend upon the statements of the public for most of its news. The intention, so far as the news columns are concerned, is always to treat everybody with abso lute fairness, and "play no favorites." The editorial page usually is written with a little more deliberation ; but editors are human, and the tempta tion to expose the cowardly- sneak tort to secure sucn garnering, m ui who knocbs- tne paper or goes connection it has been wisely sug- &bout whlsperinjr slanders, is always gested that the spring convention be preSent, and turning the other cheek I is not an elementary principle or the newspaper business. The reactionary temptation to have nothing whatever held at a somewhat earlier date than usual in order that arrangements may be perfected for a proper repre sentation at Denver. Elbert Hubbard, in Philistine. . The person who plays pitch and toss with your good name is not nec essarily your enemy. Probably if you go to him quietly and ask a favor, he will be glad to grant it, and will consider it an hon or to exert himself in your behalf. His unkind remarks are the result of the Gossip-Habit. He talks to hear himself talk nothing is quite so pleasing to his ears as the sound of his own bazoo, and to have others listen to his vaporings is gratifying to his vanity. He dissects the life and belittles the motives of anybody and every body who is not present. Should the person reviled suddenly appear upon the scene, the theme quickly changes, and the newcomer is treated with kindly deference, and is regaled by hearing the character, of someone else ripped up into carpet rags. The Gossip Microbe is born of va cuity, and 'breeds in idle minds. If you do not hear what the scandal monger says, you are not harmed. As for those who hear him,' they are not influenced against you by what he says, and for the most part his words die on the empty air. He injures no one but himself. However, the person who comes to you and tells you what the loquacious one says about you, is a positive pest. His action is unforgivable and. unpar donable. He robs you of your peace of mind. " The idle charges when told over again take on a different color and become realities. So to repeat: The individual who rails on me behind my back is very seldom my enemy; the person who comes to me and tells me what he says, is. The first I'll pardon, the latter for ever Is tabu let his name be anathe ma. He is the one who magnifies idle nothings and vacuous vaporing until they become noxious gases. The man who talks gossip is fool; but the one who repeats it is a rogue. Your friends are those who tell you of the kind things that are said of you; your enemies are thosa who, in the holy name of friendship come to you and poison your atmos phere by the other thing.
