Register and !be prepared to help the public improvement move with your vote. Following the publication of Dis trict Attorney Fullen's opinion last night, the . dice boxes were all put away to await a final opinion from the supreme court The quarrels of politicians and of fice seekers should never be allowed to invade the domain of either public or private 'business. Join the boosters and forget personal aches and pains The opinion of . Superintendent Clark should have weight with out side people who wish to know what kind of schools the city of ftoswell has before moving their families here to make their homes with us, Prof. Clark says there are no better schools in the Territory, and he has visited them all. He further says that there are no better schools in towns the' size of Roswell in any of the states. There is room in the lat ter statement, perhaps, for flattery, as well as a lack of personal knowl edge, but when the Territorial Super intendent makes a comparison with other schools of the Territory he knows exactly what he is talking about, and is exposed besides to ob jection from other towns in his own jurisdiction. He is right in the con clusion that the people of 'Roswell have the proper school spirit. Our schools are being - improved every day, and our people will not be sat isfied until - the word superior takes the place of equal in making compari sons with other schools. Education is the foundation of good government in territory, state and nation. It should, to some reasonable degree be made the test of the qualification to vote, applied to white and Mack alike. STATEHOOD GOES ON THE WAITING LIST, From Santa Fe Eagle. The position of the Republicans in congress on the statehood question has at last been made plain. They are practically united in their oppo sition for this territory at this time, and there is no more -reason for sup posing that they will be for statehood next year than there was for suppos ing last year that they would he for statehood this year. All of the pro testations which have been made : by Republicans during the past four months that were in favor of state hood appear to have been for. the benefit of the marines. - From the time , .President Roose velt declared himself in favor of sin gle statehood last-' October down to within the past few days the people of this territory have been led to be lieve that there was a good prospect for the passage of the statehood bill at this session of congress. The posi tive statements of the - delegate in ermgress that he had the promises oi a majority of the memters of con gress in-support, of. the measure ap pear to have been somewhat at var iance with the truth. The great majority of the Repub licans in congress have not now, and they have not had, the slightest in tention of passing a statehood hill for New Mexico. The -position of the Re publicans in congress on this ques tion has not materially changed in more than twenty .years. Along in the eighties the Republican members of the house committee on territories made a most scurrilous report con cerning this territory and if s people. and there had been no material change in their attitude toward this territory at the time Senator Bever idge visited the territory a few years ago and made his report whiph has not yet been -t forgotten. These re ports, one by menVbers of the house of representatives and the other by senators, show how the Republicans in congress look on the people of New Mexico. The truth is that the Republicans in congress do not con sider the people of New Mexico capa ble of governing themselves. They consider the people of this territory little short of barbarians. The fact that a Republican congress passed and a Republican president signed a Wll providing for joint statehood for New Mexico and Arizona is proof enough, if there were no other, that the Republican majority in congress does not consider New Mexico fit to govern itself. Now the hope is held out that the statehood bill will be passed at the next session of congress. This will not fool many of the citizens f this territory. If this congress intends to pass a statehood bill at -all it may as well be passed at this session as at the next session. The statement that it is not desirable to admit another state before the next presidential election is entirely too thin to de ceive anyone. It would be just as easy to put a provision in the bill fixing the date of admission the first day of next January as it would he to provide for the admission on the first of July. The bill might be passed next week providing for an election of delegates to a constitutional con vention at the next regular election and the state of New Mexico could not possibly be a disturbing element in the presidential election. If the Republicans in this congress . intend to pass a statehood bill for New Mex ico, they might as well pass it now as to wait until next year. Correct legal blanks.- Record Office.
