WITH THE FIGHTING ALLIED AKMIKS. June 9 -The first time the world war, American fighters, fo the past twenty-four hour, have occu pied the center of the itage. On no part of any of the front has there been the same amount of fighting and th same success as in the attack: made by American soioiers to tne northwest Chateau Thierry. The attacks were di rected by American commander! and were carried out lolely by American soldiers. In every cat our objective were gamed. Uur losses were not out oi proportion V our gains. Knormous losses were inflicted on the Germans, some of the captured terrain being nigh covered with dead bochei. We took 200 prisoners. American lossri in prison ert were almost nothing. Despite their losses, which Included many officers, the fighting Americans arc in me nignesi spirit! ana are still hammering away at the German crack troops. Marines Bear Brunt- The brunt of last night's and today! fighting was borne by the United States marines. A unit of marines by a long ngnt yesteroay prepared tne ntuitlon, when at i:22 o'clock Thursday after noon, orders were given to attack with all vigor. Our lines at the beginning: of th for ward move rested on Neuilly La Po trrie and ran through Champallon and I. ure l.e nocage to south Triangle; and an irregular line running to Chateau 1 Inerrv. The hardest fighting last night took ptare in the woods of llelleau. where the Germans had many machine gun nestt which greatly hampered our ad vance anil inllicted many casualties. The quality of the American leadership was shown in the fact that although the German fire cut almost all lines of communication destroying telephonic connection, the American simply went ahead until the objectives were reached. Machin Gun Ntsts. In the woods of lirlleau, the Germans bad filled the plateau with machine guns, about twenty. The Americans tried in vain to put these out of com mission with rifle fire, mortar fire and hand grenades without success. Then despite streams of bullets, they sur rounded the plateau, cut off the Ger mans and went on ahead, capturing the hill beyond the woods and inflicting extra heavy losses on the Germans while they were withdrawing. After capturing this lull the Americans moved on Ilouresches, a large village and important point on the railroad. Men who were in the f larttt told me it was no great trouble getting up to the town, out in the tons of houses the Germans had machine gunj which drove them back several times. Rout Out Bochei. Finally Lieut. W. C. Robertson, with whom was a platoon, penetrated into the town under a heavy German fire and cleared it of enemy. Meanwhile American infantry on the right of the marines had advanced against the boche in a surprise attack which was completely successful. At first the eager Americans found the going so easy that they advanced seven kilometer! instead of four, as had been ordered.
