Just before midnight the Germans
put over a heavy bombardment of light
and heavy artillery with gas shells
mixed in. We withheld our strong ar
tillery lire until we established that
the attack near Thiolet had started
when we put down a heavy barrage,
cutting the communications of the .at

well tilled with machine guns. When

then we cut loose, almost annihilating
the enemy. More than 100 German
dead were counted in one small open

Anfelean in High Spirit.
The Americans remain in the highest
spirits despite the terrific fighting of
the last three days. Their only regret
is that they have to stop awhile to
sleep.
Our wounded are being well cared
for, the ambulance and medical service

The boche attacks are slowing tip on
this new front, and I find a general
opinion that he will either mnkr another
big try between Soisfons and Chateau
Thierry or else try a drive near Amiens
or slightly to the north. There it not
believed to be much chanre of a drive
in the Toul sector, as the terrain to
be pained there is not so valuable for
the Germans.
Cant. James O. Green lr.. was the
hero of a fight near Thiolet. With
the company he commanded, he ad
vanced into the German lines where
they found ambushed machine ' runs.
There was nothing to do hut to attack
the nests or surrender. Green and his
men attacked. With five men the cap
tain was cut off, and later the regi
mental commander reported him in the
hands of the enemy. Meanwhile Cap
tain Green trying to make his way back
into the American lines ran into ten
Germans. Me with his five men killed
or wounded all the bodies and an hour
ater reached the American lines.

WITH THE FIGHTING ALLIED
AKMIKS. June 9 -The first time
the world war, American fighters, fo
the past twenty-four hour, have occu
pied the center of the itage. On no
part of any of the front has there been
the same amount of fighting and th
same success as in the attack: made by
American soioiers to tne northwest
Chateau Thierry. The attacks were di
rected by American commander! and
were carried out lolely by American
soldiers.
In every cat our objective were
gamed. Uur losses were not out oi
proportion V our gains. Knormous
losses were inflicted on the Germans,
some of the captured terrain being nigh
covered with dead bochei. We took 200
prisoners. American lossri in prison
ert were almost nothing.
Despite their losses, which Included
many officers, the fighting Americans
arc in me nignesi spirit! ana are still
hammering away at the German crack
troops.
Marines Bear Brunt-
The brunt of last night's and today!
fighting was borne by the United States
marines. A unit of marines by a long
ngnt yesteroay prepared tne ntuitlon,
when at i:22 o'clock Thursday after
noon, orders were given to attack with
all vigor.
Our lines at the beginning: of th for
ward move rested on Neuilly La Po
trrie and ran through Champallon and
I. ure l.e nocage to south Triangle; and
an irregular line running to Chateau
1 Inerrv.
The hardest fighting last night took
ptare in the woods of llelleau. where
the Germans had many machine gun
nestt which greatly hampered our ad
vance anil inllicted many casualties.
The quality of the American leadership
was shown in the fact that although
the German fire cut almost all lines of
communication destroying telephonic
connection, the American simply went
ahead until the objectives were reached.
Machin Gun Ntsts.
In the woods of lirlleau, the Germans
bad filled the plateau with machine
guns, about twenty. The Americans
tried in vain to put these out of com
mission with rifle fire, mortar fire and
hand grenades without success. Then
despite streams of bullets, they sur
rounded the plateau, cut off the Ger
mans and went on ahead, capturing the
hill beyond the woods and inflicting
extra heavy losses on the Germans
while they were withdrawing. After
capturing this lull the Americans
moved on Ilouresches, a large village
and important point on the railroad.
Men who were in the f larttt told me it
was no great trouble getting up to the
town, out in the tons of houses the
Germans had machine gunj which drove
them back several times.
Rout Out Bochei.
Finally Lieut. W. C. Robertson, with
whom was a platoon, penetrated into
the town under a heavy German fire
and cleared it of enemy. He held it for
thirty minutes until two companies of
Americans came to his aid. Thev snent

Meanwhile American infantry on the

At first the eager Americans found
