With the employment of R. A. Single
terry a manager of the good roads
work In Oklahoma, tlie good roads
committee of the Chamber of Com
merce instituted, at it meeting yester
day, an aRgrestive campaign for good
roads In the state. Mr. Singleterry
comes from Manguin, where he has
had charge of tuch work, having man
aged the organization of the Ozark
Trail boosters from Chickasha to
Amarillo. Hit headquarter will be
here in the Chamber of Commerce.
Mr. Singleterry will outline a cam
paign for the promotion of the link In
the Postal highway from here to Little
Rork. There the road will join the
Benkhead highway to Washington, D.
C, through Memphis, where there are

Alfalfa's Bumper
Crop of Wheat Is
Being Harvested
Walter Ferguson, chairman of the
local exemption board for Allalfa coun
ty and editor of the Cherokee Repub
lican, who is here (or a few days, as
serted this morning that Alfalfa county
which it the largest wheat producing
county in the state, will haryest almost
ii percent mure wheat this year than
in 1917.
The vield Inst year was -estimated at
about J.SOO.OOO bushels, but indications
this year point that the yield as a whole
will be 2s percent bigRer.
Threshing started in Alfalfa county
yesterday and will be in full swing by
the last of this week. The farmers are
experiencing no trouble in getting all
the labor needed to harvest the crop,
he said.

Order on Gas Rates
Expected Saturday
Whether the state corporation com
mission is t grant the request of the
Oklahoma Natural Gas company for in
creased ratea will be known lute this
week, when the. order of the commit-1
sion is made known. Campbell KnHcll,
member of the commission, who is in
Chicago, is expected home either Thurs
day or Friday and the order is ex
pected Saturday morning.
Experts in the office of the commis
sion are stiexaminitg the records of
the Oklahoma Operating company which
has introduced testimony to back its
claim that the new rates made effective
by the company were necessary on ac
count of the increased cost in laundry
work. The testimony was completed
two weeks ago and the decision of the
commission as to whether the company
is in contempt for increasing its rates
will probably be made known (ate this
week.

last night tnd early this morning, the
Americans captured Bouretchei an
important town, and on a front of six
kilometers advanced their line a dis
tance of two kilometers. The attack
followed the fight of yesterday, when
the Americans advanced and strength
ened their lines.
Last night's advance maybe measured
by the fact that when it started our
line was on Luce Le Docage, and now
it extends along just south to Dclleau.
through Boureschet, south to Triangle,
and then on a slightly irregular line
eastward to Chateau Thierry. This
fighting was done by United ' Stares
marines, whose slogan, "first to fight,"
they consider I now justified hecaute
they played a creditable role in the first
big battle in which the Americans were
concerned. Order to advance were
given at 5 o'clock yesterday afternoon.

The advance started at once over a
difficult terrain, swept by German ar
tillery and machine guns fire.

The town of Boureschet commands
an important ttretrh of railroad and
several ttrategic hill. It waa especial
ly desirable to capture it An Amer

a part of the company led by Lieut.
James F. Robertson, went Into the
town under the fire of machine guns
in the window of buildings. His gal
lant band stayed there half an hour,
until two other companies arrived and
drove the Germans out of the town
across the railroad tracks. An air
plane had just reported the Boche dig
ging In along the railroad.
Further to the east the Americans
advanced in support of the attack of
the marines. This unit had orders to
advance four kilometer. It got going
so well it advanced seven kilometers,
but withdrew to the lines originally
ordered reached. The Americans have
now consolidated their newly won po
sitions. Despite the heavy German ar
tillery fire our men' morale is magnificent.
