Farther east the enemy in con tinuing to counter-attack Unsuccessfully. ' Along the greater 1rt of the front the artillery fire wn the chief activity, Although at placet brilliant infantry operations are taking place, wlntr'-machine nun ne:tt make every open field a potential trap. The number of pritnerj hai been In created by thousand?, and a veritable mountain of raptured and abandoned material is in die possession nf the allies. Many kuih takrn had lireD blown up or damaged by the enemy be fore he abandoned them. The British effort along the line near Rheims have been rewarded by a bag of prisonrrs and machine ((tins. French Nearly Clear Marne of Foe. PARIS, July 23. French progress in the region of Oulchy-le-Chateau, says the Echo de Paris, will soon render the Ger man positions in that sector untenable. New forces of General De Mitry's army Have crossed the Marne between Passy and Dormans, says the Petit Journal whiph concludes that the northern bank of the Marne in this region will soon be cleared of the enemy. Artillery activity along the battle front during the course of the night is all that is reported in the official statement is Bued by the war office today. North of Montdidier in the Somme sector a local operation brilliantly conducted permitted the French to occupy the vil lages of Mailly-Rainevnl, Sauvillers and Aubevillers. The French took 350 prisoners. Foe Tries to Block Attacks on Flanks By The Associated Press. "WITH THE rKF.NC'H'AKMY'oN' THE AISNF-MAKNE FRONT. Mon day, July 22. (Night.) The fiercest fighting continued throughout the day on both wings of the German salient between the Aisne and the Marne. The efforts of the enemy are concentrated in an effort to prevent the allied troops from cutting through on either side and thus imperiling the great masses of German troops still within the temi circle. Despite the German determinatjon, French, American and Utitish troops all made progress. British at Rheims Face Fresh Foe By The Associated Press. WITH THE FRENCH ARMY ON THE AISNF.-MARNE FRONT. Mon day, July 21 Probably the heaviest fighting todav occurred on the eastern wing of the alient where Uritish troops took part. The Itritishers, who had ar rived on the scene only recently, en gaged the enemy in a hand-to-hand conflict in the extremely wooded re gion southwest of Rheims. Italians Annihilate Division. Four frrh division! faced them. One Herman division which had held the line against tlig Italians bad been anni hilated, only a few hundred remaining. The Germans had a large number of giyis in this vicinity but the British captured forty of them in the course of a strong attack in which theV made progress and took more than 200 pris oners. Hun Rushes in More Troops. Altogether the day was very satis factory for the allies, who are threat ening the Germans' communications everywhere. There is every reason to believe that the Germans are hurrying forward more divisions to add to the sixtv they already have thrown into the battle. fkttieta Score in Locaf Operations LONDON, July 2.1 Advancn in lo cal operations were scored by the Brit ish last night, today's war office report shows. The line was pushed forward slightly south of Hebuterne. on the front between Arras and Albert and Merris and Meteren, on the Flanders front. The British lines also were im proved in the Hamel sector and north of Albert. The German artillery showed con siderable activity last night with gas shells in the Yillers-P.rettoneux sec tor cast of Ainien. - Allies Cling to Heels Of Retreating Enemy By The Associated Preta. WITH THE AMERICAN ARMY ON THE AISNE-MARNE FRONT, Mormay, July 22. (Night.) German 1 resistance resulted in harder fighting todav. The operations were robbed of some of their spectacular features as the day advanced by the determination of the enemy not to be crowded into a retreat. South of Soissons the allied troops maintain all positions as they were Sunday night except in some cases where they have been improved slight ly. The allied positions, however, are in no apparent danger from attacks by German reserves. Allies Clint to Foe's Heela. In the area north of Chateau Thierry the enemy is reported by air observers to be still moving northward, but very slowly and fighting rear guard actions all the while. T he French and Ameri cans are hanging close to the heels of the retiring Germans and are making every effort to move forward. The army .moves ahead bit by bit as the line advances. F.nemy airplanes have been active on observation work but the shells fired by the German artillery in an attempt to search out the allied rear indiiate that the airmen failed to spot the al lied positions. Many shells have dropped along the Marne at irregular intervals and little damage litft result ed. . Bag of Prisoners Is Increased. Throughout the day the heavy guns of the allies bombarded the enemy lines with excellent results, according to aerial lookouts. Over all the ternturv retaken the damage wrought by Ameri can and French guns shows that the positions formerly held by the Germans suffered much more than the allied lines, notwithstanding that the volume of the fire from the Germans was greater. Further large numbers of prisoners were taken from the Germans yesterday.
