NEGRO'S ATROCIOUS CRIME In the negro quarter of Texarkana a negro, who gave his name as Rierize Bones, committed a murder of unus ual atrocity then tried to kill hemself. "With a knife he cut a woman's head IT and continued to plunge the knife into her breast until he was dragged off by other negroes. When pulled away from the dead woman he showed fight and held the other negroes at bay. Then he turned the knife upon himself and gashed his throat several times but did not produce a fatal wound. He was overpowered and pre vented from killing himself. He was taken to -Jail and given medical atten tion. The woman is said to have been his wife and jealousy the cause of his crime. THE HENDRY CASE. The case of G. W. Hendry, the M. K. & T.. conductor who sued the com pany for $50,000 damages for alleged injuris received while in the perform ance of his duties on the road, result ed in a mistrial. The trial consumed six days and the jury had the case under consideration three days. A rather novel question in writing was propounded by the jury to the trial judge shortly before its discharge. The Jury submitted to the judge the fol lowing question: "We, the Jury, would like to know that If certain Jurymen wish to find for plaintiff and others for defendant, have those who wish to find for defendant any right to compromise by a verdict for plain tiff in any sum of money?" On receipt of the inquiry the judge passed the matter fo the attorneys in th e;iso who said they did not think the Judge could enlighten the jury on the matter, This decision was signed by the attor- all Liver, Kidney and bowel troubles. It is reported that the greatest cap italist on earth is about to secure con trol of the largest cattle ranch in the world. John D. Rockefeller, the Stan dard Oil magnate, -is said to be behind the proposed big cattle syndicate in Texas, which takes in the famous XIT and a number of other ranches, some almost as large. The XIT is the larg est cattle ranch on earth and it has a history. About twelve years ago the legislature offered this tract of land in exchange for a suitable granite build ing for a state capitol at Austin. A syndicate was formed whioh made the deal, built the capitol and came into possession of the great XIT ranch. This ranch is so extensive that some states could not contain it.
