We are receiving somo ol Sabine coun
tys Inhabitants Society has been con
siderably disturbed In Shelby county tho
last three years by a scries ol lawless
ness the end ol which Is not yet In
December 1883 two citizens ol Sabino
county wero discovered ln tho woods
dead shot to death with several kinds ol
lirearms An old man sixty years ol age
Conner by name and his lour sons all
grown and two ol whom were married
wero cnarged with tho crime and wero
jailed without benefit ol ball save ouo ol
tho boys In a lew days alter tho bodies
wore discovered At this time tho Con
ners lather and sons llredjln tho south
ern portion ol Sabine county on iarras
nearly contiguous to each other which
they owned They wero prosperous hospit
able and generally Inoffensive In Sep
tember 1881 two ol the boys wore tried
and convicted tho testimony being cir
cumstantial yet conclusive Tho punish
ment ol one Charloy was assessed
at confinement In tho penitentiary
lor twentyflve years and that ol
the other Ifrcd at life imprisonment
They appealed and tho court ol appeals
affirmed tho formers case whllo It re
manded tho letters lor a now trial be
causo ol an error committed by tho pro
siding judge ln his charge to the jury At
the next term February 18851red was
retried and tho jury returned the same
verdict He again appealed anfl the
court of appeals alllrmcd the judgment ol
the lower court At this time all the par
ties were ln jail at Hemptlll tho county
seat ol Siblne county and beloro Fred
could be removed to tho penitentiary In
April 1885 a band ol men citizens pi
San Augustine and Sabino counties tak
ing advantage ol the temporary absence
ol tho sheriff went lu tho night time
broko the jail and liberated the
prisoners When liberated they procured
arms went to the bushes near their
homes and thero remained the greater
part of tho time for twolve months
defying tho olllcers and uttering
threats against any one who attempted
to capture them In September 1885
tho grand jury indicted thirteen persons
lor jallbreaklug seven ol whom includ
ing two other sons ol old man Conner
have been convicted and sent to tho peni
tentiary and all ol whom in tbo opinion
ottho writerwill be when tried In March
188CGov Ireland ordered Copt Scott
and his rangers to repair to Sabine county
to assist tho civil authorities to capture
the Connors In due time Capt Scott
and his men arrived without any one
save tho olllcers and a trusted and prom
inent citizen knowing ol his intentions
They pitched their camp In tho wild
woods and spent twentylour hours la
considering a plan ol action and recover
ing Irom a long and wearibomc march
through thickets and marshes In that
twentylour hours tho prey they sought
abandoned their accustomed haunts and
removed into tho state ol Louisiana bnt
just where no one wllllne to aid tbo
officers knew Capt Scott aided by
the poSso comltatus of tho
county Ignorant of the recent
move scoured the whole country
put under arrest all who wero known to
sympathize with the outlaws and even
crossed Into Louisiana in his effort to do
tho governors bidding but all proved
futile and the Conners aro today as
they have been during the past eighteen
months able o say they have successful
ly defied the power ol the stato The
rangers did good service in aiding the
sheriff to capture tho fugitive jailbreak
ers and in restoring the feeling ol secur
ity long disturbed among citizens but
mado a total failure in the chief object ol
their visit I have no doubt that since
tho rangers have left some ten days the
outlaws have gono Into winter quarters
with several ol like characters at their
old stand near their homes which are
occupied now only by their sorrowing
wives and some twenty young and help
less children and which doubtless are
sad examples of the effect ol human pas
sions run rlotand even mans retributive
