KOMANTIC XIFK OF BRADLEY
Bradley the murdered base Tmll
catcher it appears lived a brief but ro
mantic life The news of his tragic death
readied Louisville where he was well
known and a paper in that city pub
lishes the following interesting sketch of
his life Charles M Bradley or
Brad as he was familliarly called
was very well known in Louisville and
was one of the most pop
ular base ball men in the country
Born in June 1SU in the oil re
gions of Pennsylvania of wealthy par
ents he was surrounded with every lux
ury He acquired a collegiate education
and all the ornamental accomplishments
ot modern times He was possessed of a
charming tenor voice was a brilliant
pianist and an expert linguist Ho
was passionately fond of the na
tional game and his great ability as
a catcher Avon for him the sobriquet
of The Stonewall Backstop He first
sprang into fame as a catcher with the
Corning X Y team of 1885 and was
with the Topeka team of the Western
league in the early part of 1S8G He in
jufctV his knee cap while sliding to bases
at Denver and never fully re
covered from the consequent stiff
ness Being released from Topeka at
the same time with Weaver now of
Louisville ho signed with the Abilenes
champion Kansas team in June 1SSG
and finished the season with them He
then went on one of the new railroads of
Kansas as a fireman and in 1887 played
with the Emporia team in the Kansas
state league In 1888he played with the
famous State Fair team of Dallas
Tex champions of the Texas league
Bradley is thus spoken of by an old ball
plajer of Louisville who knows him very
intimately Just bef ere a hardfought
battle against a Topeka team at Abilene
we were in a ferment on account of our
team not having a firstclass catcher
When Weaver and Bradley arrived we
placed Weaver on second base and Brad
ley behind the bat Turk
Burke afterward reserved by Detroit
in 18SC went in to pitcli and
ouvgreat team sent Topeka to bed to the
timeof 11 to 0 It was Brads first ap
pearance and his magnificent catching
of Burkes heavy dropcurves made him
at once a favorite with everybody He
caught nearly evory contest played al
ways putting up a uniformly steady
game and to his excellent work was
greatly due our successful season
Bradley was unusually reticent as to
his past history and I doubt if there are
many besides mjTself who know much of
his past An early disagreement with
his father the result of his penchant for
base ball led to an estrangement and
troubles never coming singly he was re
jected by a young lady of Oil City Pa
to whom he was devoted He
drifted carelessly from place to place
his ambition gone and his only care be
ing to drown his aching void I will
remember his favorite ballad When
other lips and other hearts their tales of
love shall tell How souif ully poor
fBrad3 used to drink in the melody of his
own clear tenor voice when its ending
Then youll remember me had come
and how sadly he would turn away to
hide his tears

The call sent out from Dallas to the
base ball players of the country for funds
with which to employ counsel to prose
cute Angus for the murder of Bradley is
said to be getting results The matter
was given great prominence in the
sporting papers and the ball men are
reported to be indignant at the action of
Angus When the case is called for
trial the chances are that Angus will
prosecuted in a manner that will be
honor to Dallas and to the state
THE WORST XET
Of all the rainy days of the season
day probably capped the climax From
early dawn until dewy eve and up to
this writing tonight the rain has poured
in volumes Business was at a standstill

streets were converted intoslush ponds
