makes good time and is a great accommodation

long selling by holders who either cannot or do
not wish to wait any longer for a further

long time Silver bullion certificates were
strong in the face of weakness of the
market This was due to the revival of the agi

Vanderbilt stocks through all this is remark

highest price it has touched in nearly two years
Others of this group were very strong They
were almost the only stocks on the list whicn

This was on reports that the decision of the
court of appeals sustaining Jndce Barretts de

a private brokerage house was published on

Unforeseen circumstances or accidents
may prevent the accotaplisbment of the

tbe rule will bold from one season to an
other that no club whose members are
not amenable to needful discipline can
expeot to lead In a raoe tjiat calls for
the constant putting forth of tho best

It may be ns some argue that tho
publio Is growing tired of baseball and
thnttbe day of its popularity has passed
If this bo so then tbore Is all the more
reason why these organizations that ara
appearing In the diamond field from day
to day should give tbe publlo the best
ball possible It anythingwill contrib
ute to hurt the game decline and the
final downfall ot this great national
game it will be poor ball playing where
the public have a right to not
expect
only good but the best ball playing
Here in Dallas the season though yet

They are ell strong teams and can put np

good if they will and if tbey do not
and their audiences diminish with each

The news of tbe dlsbandment ot tho
Austin and Fort Worth baseball clubs
was not entirely unexpected here In
fact the dfsbandln of the former club
was predicted by ydur correspondent two
weens ago The falling out of these
clubs from an aottre participation id tbe
games of the season cannot but have a
weakening effect npon tbe Texas league
Whether it is to be taken as an indication
that baseball is declining fa popularity
let those who claim to be better posted
than the writer concerning this great sport
make answer One thing has however
been observed and that is that tbo
clubs In the Texas league are not re
quired to give that strict adherenoo to
dtsolpline necessary to the highest
efficiency in tbe Held Perhaps there is
no sport that exacts so much of those en
gaged In it as baseball and those who
enroll themselves as baseball players
know this better than any one on the
outside Yet there are many players
who bavo so muoh confidence in their
physical strength and iron constitutions
that tho role of
tbey attempt impossible
oil round good fellowship in connectlpnt
with an efficient discharge of tho exat
ingdutiesof Ihediamond field They are
not amenable to the disciplino to which
members of Eastern and Northern clubs
in the league association and brother
hood aro required to yield obedience and
tbe consequence is that it not infre
quently happons that a good player who
is a good follow also is unfit tor
duty and that too at a time when he
is most needed and when the loss of bis
services most seriously affects the work
and standing of his club
It must not be understood from tbo
above that a obarge of dissipation is
made against any of these ball players
It is not necessary for a ball player to
drink or dissipate to unfit himself for
duty He may be irregular In hours ot
rest or exercise careless or incautious in
his eating or in tbe protection of
his person against sudden changes ot
heat and cold He may impair his
