Hold
Fred Horsbrough manager of the Es
puella land and cattle company is just
down from the companys ranoh and
brings a mixed account of good and bad
Cattle he says are In fine shape and
are taking on flesh rapidly The com
pany has shipped liberally this season
and will send out about 3000 head of beef
Bteors during the fall and winter com
mencing in about three weeks and con >
tinue on until November
It has been rather dry with us until
recently be said not dry enough to
hurt cattle but the grass on the range
had become rather dry Witblu tbe last
two weeks however we have had pretty
fair rains and things generally are in
better hape During the dry season
when want of ram and the hot winds
parched up tbe grass on the prairie we
had great trouble with fires Prospect
ors would come through the country and
build a fire in such places as would cause
disastrous conflagrations One fire that
was started by two men from Parker
county about three weeks ago communi
cated to grass that was at least two feet
high and before we could extinguish it
about 8000 acres of pasture had been
burned Another fire was started by tbe
lightning but did not do so muoh dam
age Within a months time we hare
had on our ranch seven alarms of fire
and 1 can tell you we were kept pretty
busy One alarm the big one that
came in was eighteen miles from
headquarters and It was a lively
race to get there We made
the distance over hills and
valleys across rirers and creeks in just
one hour and bud one of thejsnost des
perate fire fights I was ever in When
we reached tbescene the horses were
about done up and when the fire had
been put out the men were in but little
better fix Some of them would drop in
their tracks from sheer exhaustion aud
even I who can stand about as much as
most people fainted while boating tbe
fireWe
We have matters so arranged now that
tbe fire should It break out can not get
much start I hare tbe men in tbe cen
ter of the pastures and from their camp
they can see smoke as soon as the fire
starts and as they will not have so far to
ride to It as heretofore they will be able
to check the flames before muoh
damage is done The fires which
have been started heretofore bnre all
been accidental but were the result of
carelessness Range riders are now con
stanly patrolling the roads and it will
be bard for much damage to be done this
fall Tbe rains too hare lessened tbe
danser in this respect and I feel much
easier
A WORD OF WARMING
A Cattlemans Advice to His Friends tn
Texas That Should be Hooded
Arkansas City Kas Ang 241S30
The Fort Worth Gazette
Seeing your BoundUp columns are
deroted to the interest of cattlemen I
deem it no impropriety In addressing
them through that source and let them
take it for what it is worth
Tbe presidents declining to extend the
time for vacating the territory will cer
tainly bare a demoralizing effect on the
cattle market during September and tbe
first part of October and those who ship
from localities not effeoted by this execu
tive order In September will certainly
rue It for it will not only be tbe means
of receiving small returus for their stuff
but will help demoralize the market and
be tbe cause of those who have no otber
alternative receiving almost nothing for
their bepf Texas cattlemen are closely
allied with those graziug herds in tbe
territory in faot they are a part of
them as about onehalf are owned
by men from that state there
fore I appeal to them to stop
their shipments during September
and give us unfortunate territory
men a ohance to market our stuff It is
useless for me to enumerate the causes
why we have not shipped our cattle be
fore this suffice it to say they are such
as we could not oontrole and have been
fully discussed
Texas cattle men are known far and
wide as working to the interest of eaoh
other and loyal to a friend to a fault
and now is the time to show their loyalty
by giving those in the Indian Territory
the market centers for thirty or forty
days and by doing this they will show
themselves men of judgment considera
tion and forethought Respectfully

How Many Pigs
The question is asked How many
pigs should a sow be allowed to raise
It depends somewhat of course on the
dam her vigor and milking qualities5
but eight or ten at tbe mo3t is enough
If the number dropped exceeds ten the
surplus should be disposed ot generally
a neighbor can be found who will gladly
take It and tbe balance will probably
net more profit than the whole lot would
If the attempt was made to raise them
In tne glring It might be well to remem
ber that the giver is under no obligation
to give away the best After we make
such distribution the best pigs are gener
ally left In our pens
THE TtCSH TO HAEKET
Shrewd Men are Watchlnc tho Diminishing
Supply and Treealnc to Their Cattle
There are some cattlemen who are to
day wacbing the onward rush of cattle
to the markets as a good general watches
the morement of troops in a big battle
watching erery feature and when the
proper time comes they will more for
ward their herds and snatob proQt
from the field where so many hare met
finanolal disaster Tho l ield and Farm
referring to the rush of cattle to the
market says that for nearly two years
past the cows and calves hare been
rushed into the beet market and slaugh
tered as never before Those who bare
watched this course carefully hare won
dered why the rise In cattle has not been
more rapid and decided But there is
always plenty to most people as long
as the market Is well supplied
whether behind this rlaible supply there
are nearly exhausted resources or not
It Is the everlasting now which most
people are Interested in
The people who watoh the diminishing
source ot supply are hedging holding ou
to their herds and getting ready for the
tide Touching this question of supply
one of our Eastern exchanges notes in
the markets therojthe same condition of
things It says The calf markets of
the largo Eastern cities bare lieen largel y
y
overstocked this year As a consequenoe
many beef calves of excellent breading
have been almost been giren away
Three years hence the owners ot
these calves will regret their haste in
disposing of them Ot that we feel cer
tain but the depression In the cattle
business has been such that farmers see
no way to a profit in beef
This surplus ot good bsef
calves has started a curious feat
ure of the dairy business that would seem
to upset some of tbe old ideas of stock
feeding Some butter dairymen near
New York are said to be buying steer
calves ot the beef breeds They propose
to utilize their skim milk in producing
beef of superior quality which they oan
sell to advantage being close to see how
this soheme turns out
From the Panhandle
Col H H Campbell superintendent
of tbe Matador cattle company is In the
city having come down from the ranch
In the Panhandle Sunday The colonel
who is generally In a good humor met
The Gazette reporter with a pleasant
smile on bis face and in answer to his
numerous inqnirics about cattle in the
Panhandle generally and on the Mata
dor pastures particularly said
Cattle are In as fine shape as I ever
knew them to be in August and they are
improrlng in many sections of the state
every day There are lots of fat cattle
In the Panhandle now and by the time
the fall shipments begin the country will
be full of them We hare had splendid
rains all along and I learn today that
heavy rains hare been falling up tbe
Denrer road as for south as
Decatur this moriing The range
in that seotlon where our ranch
is located is very good both
as to water and grass in faot it is as
good as could be asked Yes we will
ship this fall somewhere in the neigh
borhood ot S000 head of beef steers
We bare shipped up to this time quite a
number which you hare already pub
lished in The Gazette
Col Campbell is rarely bothered by
tbe condition of tbe cattle markets He
ships when conditions are best and as
the Matador cuttle rank high tbey
always bring top figures They have
been graded up until there are no cattle
in tbe Southwest that can beat them
Cotton Seed for Feed
Professor Gully of tbe Texas experi
mental station says Our cheapest
concentrated food Is cotton seed For
making beef or butter two bushels is
equivalent to one bushel of corn Jt in
jures the quality of butter making it
white and bard but if fed with ensilage
or corn and bran tbe butter is nicely
colored and customers do not object to
it especially if tbe ohange from grass to
cotton seed is made gradually I have
supervised the feeding of thousands of
bushels of cotton seed to cattle ct all
ages and have never noticed any serious
injury to the animal from this feeding
In some places in tbe South cows get no
rough feed except cotton seed hulls from
the oil mills They are worth pound for
pound the same as medium hay when
fed with grain or cotton seed meal
Sheep and Goats
A sheep will live where a goot will
and yield a fleece and better meat than
goat flesh A mountainous country is
better adapted to sheep than any otber
The high and dry soil the sweeter her
bage the purer air all are in favor of
the sheep Land so poor that It will not
support sheep should be planted with
trees if only hooppoles can be grown on
it But let tha goat be turned out into
the wilderness It is all it is good for as
a farm animal The best breed of goats
however have their uses as milkpro
ducers for rural families who bare not
facilities for keepiug cows and then the
goat should be put on as good rations as
a cow is Out ot nothing nothing comes
not even a goat or goats milk

accident occurred four miles west ot this
place about 4 oclock yesterday after
noon in whioh James the sixyearold

From the best information at hand it

that bad been staked on the grass during
tho day The older brother It seems
went after some corn and sent his
younger brother James to lead the horse

mangled remains
It had been dragged near 300 yardsand
was bruised and disfigured almost beyond
recognition The skull was crushed and
beat almost into a pulp and the brains
oozing and presented a sickening sight
not soon to be forgotten by those who
witnessed it
