The Brazilian consul in a letter to the New
York Evening Post states that official data
shows that the production of sugar in Brazil has
been for tho last ten years from 50 000 to 600
000 tons a year Onr Internal consumption
alone is 300000 tons annually
The truth is that Brazil can supply the en
tire demand of sugar in the United States with
in three or five years Any of the states of Per
nambneo Bahta and Bio de Janeiro can at two
years notice produce 300010 tons each ot brown
sugar Even setting aside territory in the
states of Goyaz and Matto Grosso larger than
the whole ot France and Germany Itogether the
littoral zone of sugar production in Brazil ex
tends from i degs norh of the equator to 26
degi south of the equator with a development
of 13 > 0 miles ot sea coast and an average breadth
ot 100 miles into tbecountryof land unsurpassed
for the culture of sugar cane
The reason why the export of Brazilian sugar
to the United States has not increassd is to be
found in those 30000000 of duty To pay two
cents tax per pound on an article whose original
pries Is less than the dnty and pay freight and
insurance in competition with the West Indies
sugar already at the doors ot this market is
more than any product can do But in the same
Way that such a duty explains the decrease of
our exports to this market the removal of the
duty will explain tbe Increase
The best proof of the vitality of sugar cul
ture in Brazil is that although it Is not a paying
industry at present it produces onethird more
than the culture of coffee which pays very well
in fact while Brazil produce UWOOO tons of
