He has not asked the Signal for an opinion on that point, but this paper would like to suggest that if the propos ed Conference is designed to help the farmers in getting better prices for this year's crop, it should be held before the crop Is all gathered and sold. Gov. Colquitt and the Ft. Worth Record contended that the other conference was not Intended for political effect and If that is so, then what has the November elec tion got to do with it? Snyder Hnn Mnlng For luteal In (liiNtricH That Offer Sulmtnn tlal Dividend)). The farmer or any other citizen of West Texas or any other country who depends solely on a cotton crop or any other single source of reve nue need not be surplrsed to see tho crop go to the bad leaving poverty and distress In its wake. West Texas Is admirably adapted to agricultural pursuits but the town and country that can elwnys rely on material competence are those where manufacturing Inter ests ure fostered along with farm ing. There are localities in and about Snyder where may be found a su perior quality of clay for the man ufacture of brick, tiling and pot tery. This would supply a vast scope of country with building material and the trade of all west Texas and Mexico could be supplied with the finest crockery wares. The matter of manufacture of til ing would be a, growing Industry for the reason that hundreds of West Texas towns are taking to the In stallation of sewerage and clay til ing Is well adapted to thoHo uses. Tiling Is also the best of mater ial for sublrrlgation and now when the people are seriously considering the Importance of a better system of Irrigation the fact that the mater ial Is so convenient and cheap will stimulate the installation of hun dreds of private Irrigation plants and will eventually lead to an or ganization of the people to bore deeper wells to get the same supply of water which the Plalnvlew coun try Is now boasting. These are practical propositions that can be exploited without any great amount of capital and the ef forts will not be handicapped by the uncertainties attendant upon the boring of an oil well. In the manufacture of brick, til ing and pottery the operations and the results are all the time In sight and the profits are sure, and In the matter of irrigation there is no un certainty to be flirted with. Everybody knows what Scurry County will do when It gets suffi cient water and It Is In the reach of any home owner to maintain some sort of Irrigation works to some ex tent from a garden spot to a few acres and It is admitted that sublr rlgation Is better than surface ap plication. ' We are led to consider these two propositions together because the tiling could be properly used and the growing of the one industry would incfease the demand for the other and the country would thus reap a double benefit.
