Lifeless Body of Joseph Wolford Found Beside Tracks in Canadian Yards. The lifeless body of Conductor Joseph Wolford of the Santa Fe freight service was found about 2 o'clock Sunday morning in the yards of the company at Cana dian, Texas. The train was switching preparatory to leaving Canadian at the time the body was discovered beside the tracks. Doth legs of Conductor Wol ford were crushed just aboye the ankle, the left being almost sev ered. The back of the neck was torn to the bone, the wound ex tending from one ear to the other. The face was bruised and torn. The arms and the body bore marks of violence. The body was brought to Ama rillo as soon after the discovery as possible, and removed from the train to the Maddrey-Kenyon parlors. This evening the re mains will go north to Florence, Kansas, for burial, accompanied by Mines. Kinkaid and Rooney, and Messrs. W. J. Hamilton and J. T. Ray and perhaps other members of the Order of Rail way Conductors. Just how Conductor Wolford came to his death will perhaps never be known, as he was unat tended at the time. It was the impression that he had stepped into the telegraph oftice or some other place, while the train was making up, and had been absent from the crew but a few minutes at most at the time of the dis covery of his dead body. Life was extinct, but the body was yet warm when removed to the train for transportation to Amarillo. It is believed that from the char acter of the wounds death was instant. Joseph Wolford had run as conductor in the Santa Fe freight service out of this city for three or more years, and lived at 407 Lincoln street. He was never married, but has relatives in Kansas at different points. He was thirty-nine years of age, and had been in the railway service about eighteen years. Conductor Wolford was a fa vorite with the officials of the road and his fellow conductors of the Order of Railway Conduc tors. Outside of railway circles he had many friends. He was generous almost to a fault, and was known ever to have a help ing hand for those in need among the members of the craft. He came to Amarilloon account of his health, having been a sufferer from asthma for years. In this altitude he entirely recovered, and at the time of death was in perfect health. Daily Panhan dle. Conductor Wolford was well known by many people in this city and he counted all these as his friends and when announce ment was made of his sudden death words of regret could be heard from all who knew him. In the Manday issue of the daily papers is reported the death of James S. Harrison, the editor to the News at Moran, Texas. Mr. Harrison was one of the best known newspaper men of the state having been engaged in the work for the past forty years or more. He was an ex-confederate soldier and was also : a member of the Masonic lodge. His death was caused from paralysis of the heart and was sudden. He was about 66 years of age and was well liked by all the newspaper fraternity who knew him. LOAFER, BUT HAD REAL TACT. Delicate Situation That Was Handled in Masterly Manner. "Talking about tact," said a woman who is just verging on middle age, "I never saw anyone get out of a difficult situation more deftly than did a man I met at a blacksmith shop in a New England village I was driving through last summer. I was alone in the lanes with my friend the horse, when I noticed that he limped a bit, so when we reached the next village I stopped at the door of the blacksmith shop. A man was holding up the doorpost and to him I said : " 'Will you please tell the black smith to come out? I want to see him.' "After the manner of the vil lage loafer, he did not stir, but smiled sweetly and lifting up his voice cried : "Bill, come out! There's a lady wants to see you. "From the depths of the black smith shop a vo'ce roared: "Is she young, John, or old? "In the words of an old poem, I looked at John and John looked at me. Then, still without mov ing, he called: " 'You'll be satisfied, Bill, when you get out." "I Sho' is Sick." An old negro man was riding on the train and fell asleep with mouth wide open. A mischiev ous drummer came along, and, having a convenient capsule of quinine in his pocket, he uncork ed it and sifted it well onto the old negro's palate and the root jf his tongue. The old darky, awakening, became much dis turbed. He called for the con ductor and asked: "Boss, is dere a doctor on dis here train?" "I don't know," said the con ductor. "Are you sick?" "Yas, sah, I sho is sick, I sho is sick.'' "What's the matter with you?" "I dunno, sir, but it tastes like I dun busted my gall." Confed erate Veteran.
