An Insurance Agent Who Worked His Elk Membership to a Finish and Left Unpaid Board Bills, Borrowed Money and Left a Number of Gentlemen Wondering if They Were Really Insured There are a number of people in j ibis city who would like to know of!' the whereabouts of one W. L. Tre week, who was in this city for some | ‘ time as the representative of the Pa- i c.fic Mutual Accident Insurance Com pany and the Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company. Treweek came to this city from Salt. Lane City, and with the specious plea that he was an Elk, ingratiated himself into the good graces of a number of Elks and other citizens 1 of this city. He was tall, had a san dy moustache and was of very pleas ing address. Treweek, so It is asserted, is want ed for the payment of a good sized hoard bill, which he failed to pay Mrs. St. John, at C28 Colorado ave nue. and also by a number of those whom he Insured who paid him th first premium and have heard no thing from the companies that Tre week represented that he has turned the money into the prop r channels in the offices of these companies. He was very handy at borrowing, and a number of friends C?) of Ur gent Ionian are mourning the loss of sundry small sums of money which were to be returned the very next day after being borrowed, but which have still remained unpaid. Among those who would like to know something of the Insurance money that they paid Treweek, and whether th y ate really ar.d surely insured, are Howard Fletch r. Harry B. "Jones and James Sileox and oth ers of the Fruit Growers’ A relation and quite a few others. It is said that Treweek’s family re sides in Salt Lake City, and that h s lather is a very prominent man in that city. If Treweek intended to lie honest In his transaction, he took a most unpleasant way of showing it. if skipping his board bill and leaving unpaid a i.irge number of small debt.; is any criterion. There was very little business transacted at the session, the session 'being devoid of any great amount of interest, save a slight tilt between Alderman Hertz of the Ist ward and two gentlemen who were hoping to A secure permission to place some ad vertising on several of the more prom'uent street corners in the heart _ of the city. An agreement granting permission |by the council had passed at a pre -1 vions session of the council; but, on due consideration, it was deemed ad- I visable to rescind the prenvisslon that ’ had been granted. Alderman Flynn moved that the I previous permission granted to cue 1 sign company, as represented by Mr. I Uowlett, be rescinded. The motion I was seconded by Alderman Davies. * i Speaking in favor of rescinding the motion, backed up by the opinion of 1 Attorney Rozzelle, brought him in J conflict with Mr. Howlett. I That gentleman believed that Mr. 1 Hertz had been favorable to the priv ilege being granted and this led to a wordy war between Mr. Howlett | and Mr. Il rtz, which i i the end was ! nothing more than a tempest in a teapot. The oi.'nion of Attorney Rozzelle was that the council could not grant to any private corporation the privi lege of exnosing signs on the public streets—using those streets for pri vate purposes, which it would be in effect. The mot-on prevailed. The little tempest was not over two or three minutes in duration. No one was hurt, and the council then proceeded on the regular order of its business. The ordinance licensing local auc tioneers brought forth considerable dis. us.v on. In opposition to its pass age J. A. McLucn and J. A. Graham appeared and spoke before the coun cil. In opposition thereto Mr. Can mil. :i second hand man. After con- I siderable debate the ordinance was ordered printed. A petition from the Grand J unc tion Ball Club asking tint ii be giv- I on an appropriation of $l5O from the I > 1 ity. was referred to the finance coni- I mittee. . , . The application of \Y. T. Skidmore for a license to operate a saloon at the union station was reported un favorably by the license committee. Tlie report was sustained by the . council. The award of the coal contract for f the ensuing fiscal year was granted i- to the Book Cliff Coal Company. The application for an Increase of salary to the fire chief was referred f» back to the committee for further s action. i ; r Senator Horace T.
