HE DECLARED HE WAS ROBBED Pioneer Grand Junction Man Died in Seattle Sunday, Main taining Until the End That a Fortune He Had Made in Alaska Was Stolen From Him in Seattle Yesterday a message was received in this city from Miss Ef fie Handel, a well known young lady of the city, announcing the death of her father. Thomas Ha; del. at a hospital in Seattle. Wash. The death occurred on Sunday, ollowing a long illness which came upon Mr. Handel as the result of exposure and suffering experi enced in a shipwreck that occur: ed while Mr. Handel was en route to Seattle from Alaska, where le had been prospecting in the gold camps for many years. The life and death of the deceased werfe surrounded by many unusual circumstances. Years ago lie left his home and family In Grand Junction and went •to the gold fields of the ico-bound country of the far tiorthwest. For year; his family heard nothing from him. About three months ago his wife died at the home in this city after a long illness. Shortly before he. deatli the three children received word that their father was ill in Se attle and that he was endeavoring to get back to ills wife and children, all of whom he was very anxious to see. He did not know that his wife was dead. A few weeks ago Miss Efiie Han del. the daughter, left Grand Junc tion and went to Seattle to lie; at the bedside of her father. She* found him in a critical condition, but he was overjoyed at seeing her. yel shocked profoundly and terribly over tiie death of lils wife, whom he had not . een for twelve years. The aged man continued to sink rapidly and the end came Sunday. The* interment will take place in, Seattle. Miss Handel will not return to this city for some time; perhaps not un til next spring. Claimed lie* Was Robbed. After Ills daughter reached his ! bedside at a Catholic hospital in Sc uttle the aged prospector told her. ‘ ias he had told those who had at tended to hlb wants, that he had ; been robbed of a snug little fortune __________________ Novelty Theater Continuous performance's Afternoon and Flvenings From 2:20 to 5:20, 7:20 to 11 —the— CAMERAPHONE tin* Talking, Singing, Dancing Picture- Mondays. Thomas Handel declared that when lie left Alaska for home he had sl.- "•00 in money on his person and a J small hand bag in which he carried, along with some clothing, a large , number of gold nuggets, reaching an aggregate value of a great many liun . dreds of dollars. The money and the gold represent “d the savings of years of hard toil ’ in the Alaskan gold fields, and he had started for his old home with a light ' heart and funds that he deemed suf , ficient to keep himself and family in ( comfort for many years. He declared most emphatically that lie saved the money and gold from loss when he went through the shipwreck off the coast of Alaska and ad it all when he reached Seattle. The attendants at the hospital in formed Miss Handel that the* hand bag had been ransacked before it was taken in the c are* of the officials of the hospital and that there was only SSOO in money on bis person when he entered the hospital, i , The* dying man was terribly grieved over the lots of his money and gold, and this probably hastened • his death. | The deceased had many Interesting experiences in the Alaskan gold 5 fields and underwent, many hard - ships. The deceased had a great many warm friends in Grand Junction, his 1 old home, who will hear of his death * with sorrow. IS HURTING HIM. Walter Wellman wires from New York to the Chicago Rec ord-Herald (republican) as fol lows: "The activity of the presi dent in the campaign probably does Mr. Taft more harm than good in New York. All through HRs section the complaint is general that there is too much Roosevelt and not enough Taft in the republican leadership of the hour, and there is a com mon opinion that Mr. Taft should say more and Mr. Roose velt less."
