MONTROSE TO HAVE THEM.
A movement to build a $40,000
court houße ami a $30,000 city hall
for Montrose county has been started
by the Montrose County Commercial
association. A committee has been
appointed to canvass the town and
get the taxpayers to sell the lots on
which the court house and jail now
stand and secure a whole block for a
site and build a fine court house.
When the new buildings are com
pleted Montrose will hove the finest
court house and city hall on the west
ern slope.
The railroad company will be ask
ed to erect a granite station to beau
tify the city and to take* care of the
large traffic to be handled on t lie
opening of the Gunnison tunnel.
A committee was selected to raise
a fund of $2,000 with which to prop
erly herald to the world tne opening
of the Gunnison tunnel, and tin? groat
land drawing to be held here during
the coming summer.

the high-water mark in baseball
tours will have been reached.
It is a great trip that the Sox are
to undertake. They are going to
cover about 8,000 miles in pursuit
of physical condition and artistic
skill which are counted upon to bring
to Chicago the American league
championship for 1009. Four solid
weeks will be spent in the sunshine
of the Golden state. The regulars
will put in an additional week in the
Southwest while the second division
of the team is returning via the Salt
Lake City-Ogden route.

completely outclassed the South Da
kota men. The defeat is the first
that the locals have *had this year.

Lefty Jones for Mines.

Golden. Colo., Feb. 17.— Burt
.I ones, better known in the baseball
[ world as “Lefty” Jones, has been en
gaged as coach for the Schpol of
. Mines baseball team for this season,
and will begin bis duties as soon as
the snow is off the ground. Jones is
I a well known pitcher, haying held
down the box position for the Mil
j waukee American association team,
the St. Louis Nationals, Puebio West
erns. Cleveland Americans. Topeka
I Western association and Sun Fran
cisco and Portland of the Pacific
coast league.
Although $250 has been offered
as a reward for the recovery of each
of the bodies of tin* men carried
down in the “NVaterhole” slide on the
Sneffels road at Ouray two weeks
ago. nobody has ventured so far as
to make any systematic try for their
recovery. The reward does not seem
even to induce anyone to tarry long
In the vicinity and those whose busi
ness requires them to pass the track
of the slide daily, do so with the
stride of a Marathon runner and they
only look down in the gulch where
the bodies are buried, when they are
well past the point..
