THE GRAND VALLEY PROJECT

irrigation project, which has
been field up for some week by
orders of Secretary Ballinger, i"
to be resuined uguin under dif
ferent condition*. The former
agreement provided iluif the
hern held up for some weeks by
the government and the Water
I'sers’ association.
But the government's legal depart
ment has decided that under the rec
lamation act the project must be
completed by the government alone,
if it goes into it at all. Secretary
Ballinger declares that the project is'
a feasible one. and that It is only a
question of money. He thinks that
there may be $170,000 available in
the next eighteen months for the
j work and that funds will be forth
-2 coming hereafter for the project.
This is gratifying information, not
only for the Grand valley, but for the
rest of the state inasmuch as it will
greatly increase the fruit producing
area of the stat**, in one of its best
sections. The plan is a large one and
calls for the expenditure of a large
amount of money, so much that the
people of Grand Junction felt that
they could not undertake it privately.
Now. however, that the government
is to take it up the work will certain
ly be prosecuted to a successful con
rlusiou. although it may take consid
erably longer than under private

IN THE STORES
C. \V. Primrose, the Jeweler,
has Arcured a lease cm the entire*
front fifty feet of the handsome
room in the I teed Block tlint lias
for a number of years been oc
cupied by the Wohlfort drug
store and the* Primrose jewelry
store*, the latte*r occupying one*
side* of the front of the store
and the- drug store occupying the
remainder of the* building. The
drug store* recently vacated the*
building, having been purchased
by the* I>. Smith Drug rom
paity und moved into the corner
room of the* block.
Mr. Primrose-, owing to the splen
did increase* in the* volume of his
business and the- desire to have larger
quarters, secured the entire front
section of the building. Yesterday
carpenters and other workmen began
the task of remodeling the* front of
the store and when the work Is fin
ished and a large amount of new fix
tures. etc., installed Mr. Primrose
will have one of the largest and
hondsomest retail jewelry houses in
western Colorado. It will be a beauty
in every way. strictly modern and
first class, a credit to the business
interests of any city. The Primrose
store has always been attarctive but
the enlargement will permit numer
ous and extensive changes.
The rear of the large room lias
been leased by E. A. Ryan, the
clothier, and the* work of putting u
partition between this part of the
room and that occupied by Mr. Prim
rose started today. This room ad
joins the Ryan clothing house and
the partition between the main Ryan
store room and this newly leased
room will be removed and thus Mr.
Ryan will make a big increase* in his
floor space and permit him to display
his big stock in a more advantageous
and attractive manner than ever be
fore. With this addition Mr. Ryan
will have one of the largest store
rooms in western Colorado.
Jacob Franz, an old citizen of
Grand Valley, committed suicide yes
terday by blowing his brains out. No
reason for the* act is known. Earlier
in the* day he and his learn got into
Parachute creek and the team came
near drowning, but were gotten out
in safe*ty. Some time afterwards he
went over to County Commissioner
Brennan's and got his gun and put
a bullet through his brain. No rea
son is known for his act. Possibly
the worry about his team while get
ting them out of the creek caused
him to lose his meutal balance. He
had no bad habits, his health was
perfect and he had recently paid
$2,000 in cash for a farm and had
money left. He was about 45 years
old and was a bachelor. His only
known relatives live in Kansas, Cor
oner Hopkins has gone to Grand Val
ley to investigate the death, but it is
hardly probable that an inquest will
be necessary as there is no doubt
that he committed! suicide. Glen
wood Avalanche.
Last night a gang of young hood
lums. boys who are certain to land
behind prison bars sooner or later if
their parents or guardians do not
take them in charge and cause them
to quit roaming the streets nightly,
collected around the tent on the cor
ner of Seventh and Main where even
gelistic services are being held, and
proceeded in a most disgraceful and
dirty manner to mock the attendants
at the services. The y*-lls and howls
of these young ruffians could be
heard for several blocks and they
kept it up for a good while. Of
course no police officer put in an
appearance and the boys were undis
turbed. so far as any officer was
concerned, until they Mred of their
nefarious work.
The Glen wood hall team is being
I strengtuened by new players all the
time. R. K. Wells, formerly of An
son’s Colts, Is en route from Chicago
and will hold down second base, lie
is also a very fine batter and will
greatly strengthen the team. His
many friends will be glad to know
that Randy Ballinger will also be on
the team again in a few days and will
display some curves that puzzled the
batters when ho was in the box. The
j team is as good ns any Glenwood has
| ever had and they will win victories

A veritable city ol fun will be the
carnival grounds of Nat Reisi next
week during the six nights that the
big series of attractions will be shown j
in this city. There are in ell about!
one dozen shows and several big J
startling fret* acts. The shows are
all clean, with reasonable admission 1
. prices within the reach of all. It
will be the biggest summer attraction
offered in Grand Junction this year.
The carnival grounds are on South
Fifth street, within easy reach of the
tear line r.nd within easy walking dis
tance of many sections of the city.

may soon be lost to Colorado, at
least for n time.
The man is Eugene Grubb of Car
bondale, at the foot of lofty Mount i
Sopris, and he has been selected by
the Twin Falls Irrigation company
of southern Idaho to assist it in col
onizing the odd million acres of rich
land upon which it has introduced
the waters of the Snake river, after
constructing one of the most expen
sive dams in irrigation history.
Grubb is supposed to know more
about raising "murphies’’ than any
other man in Colorado. He has per
fected the product of his ranch until
his potatoes command a handsome .
premium over those raised by any
other rancher in the state, and he
will in future demonstrate the capa
bilities of Twin Falls soil in the mat
ter of tuber producing. Grubb is now
at Hagerman, Idaho, where he assist
ed in tho opening of that new town
June f>. This opening was ni’ade un
der the provisions of the Carey act,
and an enormous number of people
was present when the tract was
thrown open.
The Colorado authority on agri- j
culture, with potatoes as his spec- 1
laity, Will probably make Jerome,!
Idaho, his headquarters. He will
have a corps of assistants and thef
company will employ experts in every I
department to assist Grubb in dem
onstrating the value of its land. A •
large number of Denver and Colo
rado -people went to the opening and
took chances in the distribution of
town lots and fruit tracts, probably j
more for purp6ses of speculation than
for real homesteading.
Grubb's going to Idaho is only an
other example of the demand for i
Colorado experts in the development
