GUNNISON NEWS-CHAMPION | e T Stablished land. FOR BETTER ROADS ALONG THE GUNNISON HIGHWAY u.a.'..»,g; fiuurag.- Howse Next Week, Wed mfflhab"-fihfiw. In consultation with other citizens | Messrs. J. Be sure 10 be there, Mr Good Roads Lothusiast Thie 18 oue of the biggest things we have on tap. The automobile travel | across the continent s increasing | marvellously. Recently the “Path | finder car” from St. Louis went over | the Glenwood route, and negotiated | the road after a hard struggle. A party of ten or twelve autos has | staried from Altastic Oity, N. J i will reach Deuver about the 14uh, | and is spying out a road for 1915 ’ W._ R Hearst, the great New York | editor, proposes to advertise exten- | smively the route decided wpon hy' this party and guarantees 2 (XK) autos 10 pass over it in the one season of 1915. It is probable the number will be nearer 5,(00). Already Glen wood Springs boosters have arranged to have a representative meet this party st Omahs 0 urge the Grand niver road. . County Thareughly Weat If there was any dry territory in Gunnison county after the rains of the week, we have yet to hear of it For five days the down pour con tinved. Crops everywhere, have re sponded and the vegetation seems to be leaping into the air. We already had prospect of the largest produc tion on record for this section, bat, especially with the grain and the grass upon the range, these heavy rains will help amaziungly The advantage of rainfall is that it carries air with moisture into the soil and leaves the earth open and porous Clopious irrigation must be followed by cultivation or soil is in clined to pack, and become hard and heavy. o Four Hundred Feet of Grand Stand A new and verv desirable feature of Cattlemen’s celebration this year will be 400 feet of grand stand, 200 on each mide of Main street in the two blocks south of Dr. Sanford’s. 1t will be covered, and the street en closed with a bull tight fence, 8o that all sports, like the gate race, and bucking contests will be in the en closure with spectators comfortable and safe There will be a judges stand and races will be ran up Main street, instead of down, making it much easier for the horses. All con tests of every kind are also to be held in front of this grand stand. Thie is one of the very desirable improvements the committee 1s mak - ing for this 1911 celebration. And it is one which will help draw the crowd, for every fellow will know that he can now ve comfortable and see everything that goes on. Also it eliminates the danger. We have been extremely fortunately in the way of accidents at our celebration and the intention s to quit running risks while our credit 1s good. Short Routs Over Blue Mesa. Archie Carpenter, was over fish g this week, and wlls us the Salida folks are heartily with Gunnison for the Rainbow Route He advises us that there is a short cut over Blue mesa. By erossing the river unear Sapinero and keeping around on the tirst bench to Curecanti Needle, one can follow the original Mormon wagon road, now almost obliterated, into the valley of the Blue. He de clares this is a feasible road and will save 25 miles. It might not save that much, but would surely save fifteen or twenty miles Salida Bend Expensed The music committee of the -«: . arTanging to secure m‘h‘ for our grand celebra tion Cattlemen's Day. This is some what dependant upon railroad fare, ‘\oimv expenses of the band will oth erwise run high iuto the hundreds We want a good band and Salida has a dandy Thirty pieces and splendidly drilled, they say. Sendberg-Williams Wedding Announcement cards this week brought the news that our friend (reo. Sandberg, popular freight con ductor on the Grande, and Mrs. Annette Thurman Williams of Los Angeles, were married in that city July first. Mrs. Sandberg, also lived here many years and has a world of warm friends. After August first their home will be here in Gunnison. Commissioners Meet Messrs. Whalen and Collins, county commissioners held a short meeting Monday, but bevond draw ing the jury list and allowing bills, postponed other business till next week Tuesday when Commissioner Wiley will be down. Mr. Wiley did arrive Monday night, but finding the meeting adjourned, went on to the Buttes to take in the celebration. Going to Idaho. Fred Borsum and son Henry were in town Wednesday arranging for the auction sale 1o be held at their ranch on Tomichi creek, Wednesday July 19th. This is elsewhere adver tised 1n the News-Champion.
