alic acid Breitkoph had been sick
and out of work and was to have been
evicted to day for the non payment of
rent Breitkoph left a letter addressed
to a benefit society of which he was a
member saying that he preferred to
die rather than ask for farther aid
from the society The bodies when
discovered gave evidence of terrible
agony having been suffered from the
effect of the poison

Minister Lincoln at London saying that
official notice had been given in the
house of commons that a bill would be

queen to prohibit British subjects from
taking seals in Behring sea The news
of this action was received with satis
faction at the state department Gen
erally it is taken as an indication that
the British government is preparing to
accept the condition imposed by the
president as a preliminary to arbitra
tion and cause the British vessels to re
frain from sealing meantime

value of the marine fur fishery in
Behring sea and adjoining waters for
1890 was 510111 showing a total
atch of MSoo seals The num
ber of fur seals caught by for
eign vessels and disposed of in Vic
toria was 3474 of which all but 294
were caught in Behring sea The total
ralue of the Canadian seal catch was in
creased 177661 owing to the advance
jf one dollar per skin and the increase
if 11181 skins in the catch

some of the lumber dealers would open
their yards and that they had seceded
from their original agreement is em
phatically denied at the head
quarters of the Lumber Dealers
association It is shown by statistics
that the consumption of lumber in the
building trade was reduced the first
week of the strike about 80 per cent
and the second week over 95 per cent
The estimated loss in wages by the
workmen thrown out of employment
during the first week of the
strike amounted to about 250000 and
during the second week to about
r40000 Should the strike continue
until next week it is said fully 20000
men will be thrown out of work by
stoppage of building operations The
tie up is also being severely felt in Al
bany Buffalo and Tonawanda where
a large number of canal men are lying
idle

returned a verdict of acquittal in the
case of the Indian Plenty Horses who
was on trial for the murder of Lieut
Casey during the late Indian outbreak
Judge Shiras delivered the charge to
the jury instructing them to bring in a
verdict of not guilty lie explained
that Judge Edgert disagreed with him
upon the proposition of bringing in an
acquittal but said the instructions to be
given however would be considered
those of the court His charge was
quite lengthy He declared that in his
opinion actual war existed at the time
of Caseys death

hunter arrived in this city from the up
per peninsula and reported that forest
fires are doing much damage to pine in
Ontonagon county Some of the most
valuable timber has been consumed The
hunter said that his party was com
pelled to flee from the forest for their
iives A tract of timber that two weeks
ago was worth 500000 is now hardly
worth 8100000 All mills have been
stopped until the exact amount of dam
age is learned Bray Choate of this

Pasquelena Robertello the Italian girl
who shot her lover to death because he

and exciting scenes ever witnessed
in any court room occurred on
the announcement of the verdict
When the clerk asked the usual ques
tion of the foreman he almost shouted
Not liuilty and without waiting for
a poll of their names the jury shouted
Not guilty not guilty The scene
which followed beggars description
Man jumped upon their seats waving
hats and handkerchiefs and yelled and
cheered Nor was their much effort to
restrain them

Kill Her Three Chlldrea Fires the House

A small frame residence at the corner
of Buchanan avenue and Gordon street
Topeka Kas burned Wednesday
morning In the ruins were found the
charred remains of Mrs W A Aupte
gron aged twenty five and her three
children all girls aged from fifteen
months to five years All the sur
rounding circumstances point to a de
liberate and carefully planned triple
murder and suicide The scene of the
tragedy is in a sparsely settled portion
of North Topeka and the house sup
posed by the neighbors to be uninhabit
ed It was learned that the family
moved into the house about a month
ago The father is a teamster and
left home only that morning to look for
work

Robbed of Eight Thousand Dollar
Tuesday morning at 3 oclock as II
Bollermeier was on his way home in
Nashville Tenn he was attacked by
two colored men who under the muz
zle of revolvers compelled him to give
up his cash 6000 and other articles of
value Bollermeier was then bound
and gagged and left in an unconscious
state As soon as he was found and the
situation made known a posse gave
pursuit and captured the men at Lense
burg but not before they had managed
to secrete 86000 of the money Two
thousand dollars was recovered They
are now in jail at Nashville-

Wednesday night says that Sir John
MacDonald the premier is dying He
was attacked with congestion of the
lungs and the dispatch says the doc

men would tie their hands and feet and
plunder everything in the place and
how on arriving at the frontier the po
lice would extort fresh bribes to al

The Boiler of an Indiana Sawmill Hursts

fort was the scene of a terrible disas
ter Thursday afternoon The large
boiler at P E Kramers sawmill ex
ploded with appalling results 1
Hall the engineer was instil
killed and William Davis Eric Koont

were fatally injured Of the thi
men employed in the mill scarcely
escaped without more or less injury
Others are suffering from broken limbs
and scalds and it is difficult to deter
mine the exact extent of their injuries
The explosion took place shortly after i
oclock and the mill is a complete
wreck debris being scattered about for
a radius of 200 yards The cause of the
explosion is not known the boiler hav
ing been pronounced safe and insured
only a week ajo One of the employes
says that he looked at the g
only a few minutes before the ex
plosion and it showed plenty of water
The bodies of some of the men were
frightful to look upon The engineer
was mutilated beyond recognition his
clothing torn from him and his body
