From a Series of Elaborate Chemical Tests:
An equal quantity of bread (biscuit) was made
with each of three different kinds of baking powder
cream of tartar, phosphate, and alum and submitted
separately to the action of the digestive fluid, each
for the same length of time.
The relative percentage of the food digested is
shown as follows:

These tests, which are absolutely reliable and
unprejudiced, make plain a fact of great importance
to everyone : Food raised with Royal, a cream of
tartar Baking Powder, is shown to be entirely diges
tible, while the alum and phosphate powders are found
to largely retard the digestion of the food made from
them.

Not very much of the story of ''Madam
Sherry" is revealed in advance notices.
Mainly the thread of musical and other
incidents of this big musical success
concerns a young New York unmarried
man-aboui-town sowing his wild oats oh
the money sent him by an uncle who be
lieves his nephew married and the fath
er of two children, ine uncle unex
pectedly' pays a visit to the studio of the
nephew, who, to support bis story of
domesticity, is forced to gather unto
himself a family. lie presses his very
unpalrician housekeeper into service to
pass as his wife and his own sweetheart
to act as one of bis children and an adult
guest as his son. It is from tbe comic
embarrassments growing out of this first
situation, that the fun of the piece be
gins. Of course attendant misadven
tures consequent upon the first deception
follow one another throughout tbe play
Tbe main love interest is introduced at
the very outset with the arrival of the
uncle, who brings wilh him a relative
Yvonne Sherry, a young maid just out
a convent. It develops that the sweet
heart of the young- man-about-lown
turns fickle and falls in love wilh the
guest posing as her brother, a plight
that opens the way for tbe mischievous
ly scheming nephew and the visiting
convent girl to become sweethearts,
which they do in what is declared to
be one of the oddest ways in the world.
Incidentally it is the love of the convent
girl and nephew that introduced into the
play as the love theme, the air of the
production, "Ev'ry Little Movement lias
X Meaning All It's Own," that at once
became a popular number all over the
world.

Program To Be Good
Very soon the senior class of Madison
Institute will give "King Rene's Daugb
er" and "Creatures of Impulse." It has
been the custom for a number of years
to have a senior play before commence
ment and almost without exception the
plays have drawn full houses. Tbe pro
gram for this year is a clever one and
will be presented by an exceptionally
strong cast. The rehearsals are on now
and will contitiue until the program is
given. Tbe specialities are to be differ
ent this year from anything before offer
ed, some novel and catchy fold dancing

State University News.

Slate University has Just received an
invilation from lour other colleges, in
cluding tbe Slates of Illinois, Indiana
and Ohio, to join in an extemporaneous
oratorical contest to be held annually.
The plan is to let each speaker have six
weeks to read up on some general sub
ject and on the night'of ihe contest he
will be given some particular phase of
the subject with one hour's notice. A
committee will be sent to Cincinnati to
arrange about the master.
Major Learning, head of the compos
ing room of the Lexington Herald, ad
dressed the Press Club in the Universi
ty Thursday afternoon. His subject was
the"The Mechanical Side of theXews."
He gave many good points on newspa
per work and was an excellent joke
smith. State's basket ball five defeated the
team from Marietta, Ohio, Thursday
night by a score of 40 to 10.
Saturday night State's team defeated
the University of Louisville by a score
of 34 to 10. The girl's team defeated
tbe girl's team from Winchester 37 to 3.
Two games with Vanderbilt will be
this week. "Vandy" boasts of having
au unusually strong team this year.
State defeated them last year in two
games and wrested from them the cham
pionship of the South.
