The state agricultural de partment is loaning each of the nine counties a home canning outfit, and the counties themselves are furnishing interested teachers, parents and wide awake country girls to form the clubs. In Jefferson county clubs have been developed at Valley Station, O Ban- uon's and Okalona. During the latter part of May the government expert gave three demonstrations. Of course there were no ripe tomatoes or beans In the country that early In the sea son, so they were bought in the city and taken to the school houses where the clubs were to meet. Besides the girls who were members of the clubs, many mothers and Interested house keepers came and brought their din ners so they might get the benefit of ail the work that was done. After the first lot of tomatoes bad been put through the canuer by the expert in forty minutes the girls were thoroughly Interested and continued the work. It was remarkable how fast the work weut with five girls as busy as beavers. As one old farmer expressed it: "Every year I've been on my place I've made up my mind to plant fewer tomato vines, tor I have more tomatoes tnan we can use ana give away. But I don't believe I'll cut them down In number this year If the girls can do the work this fast. I've Oldham, mdse. Oldham, mdse. Oldham, mdse. Oldham, mdse. -74 a o'bannon's canning club. Just been figuring ou it a little bit, and this little canner that'll set on top of a one burner gasoline or coal oil stove will can sixteen quarts of tomatoes ever. three-quarters of an hour. That Is' 208 quarts in a ten hour day." "Yes," remarked one of the bouse keepers, "and the great beauty of it Is with the temperature you can get it one of these can nets, you can can any thing and be sure of its being perfect ly sterile. You don't have to use any thing with beans, for instance, but I pinch of salt and a little water. . "Well, it took a long time to get th Aid mothers in this part of the countrj to use thermometers to test their crean before churning, and I reckon it'll takt some time to get them to use moden fanners with thermometers so they wil be certain of results In canning." Comments of World-Famous Men on the CHAUTAUQUA Keep in Mind that Our City is to Have a Great Seven-Day Chautauqua Program This Season. Hon. Theodore Roosevelt Ex President of the United States says: "The Chautauqua is the most distinc tively American thing in this country." Hon. William Jennings Bryan Secretary of State says: "The chautauqua affords one of the best opportunities now presented the public speaker for the discussion of ques tions of interest to the people. The au dience is a select one and always com posed of the thoughtful element of the community, and as they pay admission they stay to hear. 1 bel ievc that a con siderable part of the progress that is now being made along the line of moral and political reforms is traceable to the influence of the chautauqua." pi i Dr. Frank W. Gunsaulus the World's Greatest Preacher and President of Armour In stitute of Technology says : "The chautauquas have become a great people's university. They are among the greatest feeders for our colleges and universities. He further states that ten per cent of the students in the. institu tion of which he is president. Armour Institute, owe their presence to the chau tauqua influence." . . .J Hon. Champ Clark Speaker of the National House of Represen tatives, says: "A great many newspaper wits shoot their shafts at chautauqua lecturers, and certain purse-proud editors undertake to make it a sin for a public man to lec ture for pay. They think it the height of sarcasm to refer to a public man as a chautauquan. There is one great vir tue in chautauqua money. It is clean money. You do not have to explain where you got it If a man does ne-t desire to go to hear a lecture, there is no law to compel him to do so. The chautaunua ha hn r..i force in directing the political thought of the country, which is largely sociological in these latter days. I defend th chautauqua and the chautauqua lecturer, with whom I have teen associated, because they constitute as fine a group of men and women as can be found among th splendid citizenship of America I have a deep and abiding interest in them. and-iiuU,. tnem a hearty godspeed in their work."--From Thren. ) I
