The average price of stock on the Chi
cago market last week as compiled by
the Drovers Journal Cattle, $3.25; hogs
$9.15; sheep $4.70; lambs $7.50. On the
corresponding week of last year the av
erages were cattle $7.80; hogs $7.85:
sheep ! 1.30 and lambs $7.25.
B. D. Holtzclaw shipped two cars of
cattle and hogs to Cincinnati, The first
load continued heifers bought from B.
V. and W. K. Grines at fic and hoes
bought from II. C. Arnold at 8 1-2 cts.
They averaged 170 lbs. The second car
contained 93 hogs averaging 200 pounds,
at 8 l-2c; 53 were bought from S. B.
Sanders, 37 from J. II. Goggin and 8 of
Lee llankin, of Hubble Interior' Jour

In London, England, is a hospital

The California State Railroad Com
mission cut every rate of the Wells-Far-go
Co. in that Stale.
The first bale of Alabama cotton of
the 1913 crop was sold at Montgomery a
week earlier than last year.
At Chico, Cal., the striking Industrial
Workers of the World opened fire on
the police officers, killing ten of them.
The Pennsylvania Railroad, carried
over a hundred million passengers dur
ing the year just closed and only four
were killed.
Lexington had its usual murder Sat
urday night, when Xeal Mitchell was
killed by Mack Tresler without appar
ent cause.
To prove the Monroe Doctrine unten
able Representative Kent, of California,
inserted three verses of Scripture into
the Congressional Record.
A Fort Smith, Ark,, wholesale drug
gist, was sentenced to 180 days in jail
and a fine of $450 for sending liquor in
to the Indian country in Oklahoma.
Services were held in Scolt county on
Sunday especially to pray for rain, which
is greatly needed, the tobacco and corn
in many cases having literally ruined.
Eighteen men lost their lives in a dou
ble explosion of dynamite and gas in the
mines of the Philadelphia and Reading
Coal & Iron Company, at Tower City,
Pa.
Miss Kittjf Smith, who is armless,
marked her ballot with her foot when
she voted, in Chicago, at the first wo
man suffrage election held in May wood,
a suburb.

Chief Justice Neil, of the Tennessee
Supreme Court, in an order declining to
issue a supersedeas, upholds the Demc
cratic election law passed recently by
the Legislature.
Secretary Bryan's plan to place a pio
tectorate over Nicaragua was disapprov
ed by the Senate Foreign Relations Com
mittee 8 to 4. The vote should' have
been unanimous,
The English navy has developed fire
control to the point that a single ofDcor
can discharge all the guns on one side
of a ship at the same instant, all of the
shells reaching the target together. .
In a pitched battle at the primary
election at Upper Buffalo Creek, Owsley
county, Gilbert Harris, Clalbe Gilbert,
and Harris Gilbert are reported to have
been killed and Sid Gabbard was seri
ously wounded.
The Biblical story of the flood is con
firmed by a translation of the hierogly
phyes on a tablet found in Nippur by a
University of Pennsylvania expedition,
and which is believed to be at least 4,-
000 years old.
Mr. and Mrs. Stuyvesant Fish gave a
ball at Newport Saturday, with 500
guests present. The value of the jew
els that bedecked the women is placed
$12,000,000, the decorations cost $10,000
and the supper $5,000.
Ex-Governor Patterson, of Tennessee,
was arrested in a house of ill fame at
Nashville. When presented in the po
lice court Patterson confessed the truth
of the charges against him and offered
no excuse for his "gross delinquency."
Florida is to have a brick highway
from Jacksonville to Tampa, a distance
of 230 miles. The project has been as
sured by the vote of Hillsborough coun
ly, of which Tampa is the county seat
to issue $1,000,000,000 of bonds for the
work in that county.
The announcement that it is estimat
ed it will cost the Government upward
of $15,000,000 and seven years of time to
get a physical valuation of railroads,
may be taken as a warning that it will
require fourteen years and cost $30,000,
000. Most of the manufacturers of the
country have ignored the lists of ques
tions sent them by the Senate Finance
Committee in regard to the probable ef
feet of the Democratic Tariff Bill, Sena
tor La Follette stating that only 66 re
plies had been received to 2,500 sets sent
out.
Fire destroyed the New Albany plant
of the Wood Mosaic Flooring Co!, to
gether with 17 small homes nearby. The
total loss is estimated at $300,000,
of which $250,000 is to the company, par
tially covered by insurance. Eleven
persons were injured and many had nar
row escapes.
The foreign commerce of the United
Slates for the fiscal year ending June
30, 1913, was the greatest in the coun
try's history, the imports amounting to
$1,812,621,160, showing that after the
imports have been paid for a balance of
more than $650,000,000 remains abroad
to the credit of the American people.
