" Of all the varied insurances in the world of business, without doubt Lloyds possesses (he most curious. They insure everything. Thousands of people insure themselves against the risk of having to undergo an operation for appendicitis. Young ladies iasure themselves against the disappoint ments of spinsterhood, and there are anxious fathers insured in the event of their spouses presenting them with twins. They will insure the throne of a kinir, or the benefit of a music hall clown up to any amount for which he is willing to py. Again, owing to many estate owners be ing timorous'on account of earthquakes, Lloyds do quite a comfortable business in insuring against damage caused by violent shocks. In North Wales an es late was insured against this risk for 100,000 pounds sterling. Paderewski insures his right arm for 2,000 pounds, and Kubelik his for a much larger sum, while singers insure their voices. Authors lake out policies in respect to the success of their books, playwrights in respect to their plays, composers their songs, and artists t he acceptance of their pictures by Salon or Academy. There is practically no limit to the imagination of Lloyds. Not many months ago an undertaker in London even inquired for what price they would relieve him of any reliability for shocks caused to private individuals by his cof fins being taken to the wrong house at night. Even when allowance is made for the probability that the selection of members of the Board of Education enlisted a livelier interest thanthe question of bond issue the falling off of the registration of women in Louisville is striking. More than twice as many women registered last year as this year. "Getting out the vote" has always been one of the problems of politics. There are always many men who either shirk the duty of casting the ballot or care so little about it that unless they are jogged about it, or perhaps offered inducements of one kind or another, they forget to come to the polls. The women seem to have a harder time get ting out their vote than the men have had. They are less experienced, of course, but the vote which they want to get out is probably composed more largely of uninterested units than the male vote is. . The spectacle of the ballot for women going begging is one that will doubtless cause the women who are leaders in the suffrage movement to put on their think ing caps. There's a good old recipe for rabbit pie, which says, first catch your rabbit. The philosophy might be applied by women who are going to improve gov ernment by the votes of women. Courier-Journal. Frank Horton had said to bis dis couraged partner. "If we hope to re main In real estate business, we must never let a woman's refusal to sell stand In the way of a deal of the mag nitude of this. That weed-grown, V shaped strip of land Isn't doing ber the least bit of good, and yet she ties np our sale of that North Columbus property of the Driving Park associa tion through her refusal to unload." "We can't make her sen." his part ner, Tom Haines, had answered de spondently. "And she says she won't -for any amount of money. And you know there Is no use reasoning when a woman la stubborn. She won't even answer my letters.' "Who is the woman?" "Prudence Grimes, and she Uvea in the little town of Suffolk. An old maid, I guess, and with peculiar ideas of her sort. "I'm going out there," Frank had averred. At Suffolk be left his coach, almost colliding with a tall, pretty light-haired girl Just In the act of boarding the train. "Dolly!" "All a-b-o-a-r-d!" Suffolk is a small town. Trains stop there for about one moment. Frank drew the natty suit ease from the half-paralyzed fingers of the girl, seised her resolutely by the arm, and drew her away from the train. "Why the very Idea!" The maid flushed Indignantly as the conductor shut the door of the vesti bule, and the wheels beneath It began to turn. "Look what you have done, Frank Horton. You've made me miss my train." "Undoubtedly." The young six-footer's Hps were compressed. ' "I want a little conversation with you." "We have nothing to talk about" The girl spoke coldly. "Oh. but we have. Why Is it, Dolly, that you have never wrote me? And how comes it that you are here?" "My aunt lives here. If you must know. And as far as writing is con cerned. I didn't write well, Just be cause." "I can see a bench In that little park," said Horton with seeming irrele vance. "Let us go over there and try to come to some sort of an under standing." "No. IH not," declared Miss Dolly, In a voice with Just a suspicion of s quiver In it. The quiver was the flaw In the ar mor. In three seconds Bhe was doing Just what Hoi ton had suggested and the youth was sitting beside her. "And now," Horton Insisted, "you must tell me three things: why you left Chicago so hastily, what you are doing here, and why you have never written me?" "I shall do nothing of the kind." an grily denied the maid. "But yoa wllL" Horton'a tone was positive. "Anyway, I have been taught never to write to a man until he has written to me first" Horton looked his disgust "As if." he parried, "I were possessed to some pyschlo gift to tell me where you were. This is the last place in the world I would look for you. Fate Is against you and I Insist npon the an swer to my question. The answer that you wouldn't give me In Chicago." "My, how terrible It has become," said Dolly mockingly, and then, more decidedly, and with & hint of anger, "who gave you the right to speak to me so, Mr. Frank Horton? I'll answer your question or not Just as I choose." "But Dolly" the man's voice was humble now "there Isn't any reason kt all In not answering." He reached ovejvand took one of her hands. "Why ditat you tell me that you were com ing away, Dolly?" "I didnt know. Frank. Really, boy, yoa are too Impatient" .f nut your answer, lnsisiea xiorxon- "Toa havent given It to me and I am waiting." Two starry eyes turned to analyse the man. "There are none so blind." half whispered a gentle voice, "as those who will not see." "You mean?" be demanded eagerly. "I'm not going to tell you what I mean," pouted the girl. "And to think that I ever Imagined you to be smart I am going to take yoa up jo,, the bouse to meet my aunt and have yoa explain your boorish conduct "Then your aunt really lives here?" "Yes, It Is on ber account that I came back here and left Chicago so hurriedly. She Is such a suspicious person! A concern calling itself the Keystone Realty company has been trying to buy an absolutely worthless piece of property from her, and after she had refused several offers, they made her a positively startling one. She called me from Chicago to consult with her I am her only relative, yoa know. I advised her to accept end today she sent a letter to that effect She" "What la her name?" gasped Hor ton. "Miss Prudence Grimes. Why, what oa earth Is the matter, Frank Horton. stop that!" But Joyous youth was not to be re strained.
