A rather big price to pay for very doubtful fun. but well applied, all the same. The Louisville Herald says that "If Mr. Beckham relies upon the Post in his coming race for the Senatorial nomina tion, he is relying upon a potential trai tor. He need not be surprised if he is treacherously ambushed by this Ishaem- ite of journalism." We have always told the former Governor to beware of Knott, who would have betrayed the Savior if he had been in the place of Ju das Iscariot. Murphy says there is another day com ing for Tammany, but unless it mends its ways, let us hope that it will be a long time first. New York speculators sold 113,000 cases of cold storage eggs to a trrocer. making $75,000, Then the grocer sold them at a prom of 1280,000. The ulti mate customer alwaysholds the b g. The heathenish practice of throwing rice on newly-weds originated in China. Civilized people ought to have more sense. Secretary of War Daniels thinks four teen chaplains to 67 000 men in the navy is not enough to save their souls, and will ask Congress, for more. With a prospect of war with Mexico, there ought to be some way to prepare the Jackies for kingdom come. The few remaining followers of Roose velt continue to assert that they have ust begun to fight, which the same is all poppycock. They are just trying to make a noise to keep their courage up. When the Colonel sailei for South America, nearly all of the Progressive party went along. During the storm this week a train on a Pennsylvania road was 36 hours lata. This is almost as bad as some trains in this section. A St. Louis preacher has evolved a scheme Xo increase Sunday-school at tendance. It is to give every child whe attends and brings a penny a new buffa lo nickel. The plan is most successful in drawing crowds of children, but whether it is a good one is a question, as most of them will regard it as a snap to make four cents. If the Government raises the embargo on firearms to Mexico, a Kilkenny cat fight might result to good results. It will be recalled that in that famous fight nothing was left of the cats but their tails. Collector John W. Hughes has rece'iv ed 7C3 applications for the 14 jobs at his disposal. The desire for office is spring ing eternally in the human breast every where at present. But won't there be disappointments and heartaches? Editor J. M. The Democratic Administra tion Endorsed It is not often that the first elections after the inauguration of a President do not show a reaction against hit party. In fact, it has become a rule so general that it is expected. But precedent cuts no figure when the people are determin ed to show their appreciation of an ad ministration which is trying to live up to all party promises, with an eye single to the interests of the greatest number. It is, therefore, not surprising that in the three States of Massachusetts, New Jersey and Maryland, where State tick ets were elected hut week, that Democ racy vs signally triumphant. Mass chuselts and New Jersey have been re garded as certainly Republican, and Ma ryland has often gone that way. but each of them returned large Democratic plu ralities this time, former rock-ribbed Republican Massachusetts electing the entire Democratic ticket by some 60,000 plurality, which is really as wonderful as it is gratifying So far the Democratic leaders have made no serious mis'akes. The Presi dent has shown a remarkable devotion to the people's cause and Congress has fulfilled in large measure what was ex pected of it. Clark and Underwood, contending candidates with Mr. Wilson for the Presidency, have labored with him to crystalize into law the pledges upon which the Democratic party re gained the power it was so long depriv ed of, and it now seems that it will re main in power for many years to come, as it did before the war and for sixty years made this the most p osperous and happy country on the globe. It will re main in power if the good sense, fine judgment and patriotism continue to prevail as they have during the eight months that the Democratic party has been in charge of the Government. The election in Kentucky being for local offices might not be tan en as an endorsement of the Administration, but it really is, b" cause the people are be coming satisfied that the Democratic party is capable of administering the af fairs of the country with wisdom and conservatism and, therefore, the whole trend of public sentiment is toward the party of the people, which rules by and through them W.
