Chautauqua July 5th.
Another delightful Chaulauqau week
will soon be here. Two years ago we
had our first one put on by the lied path
Organization. It was good. A year ago
the same people put on another one for
us. It was better. This year it will be
better still. It wil begin July 5th and
continue seven days and by the courtesy
of Dr. Crabbo will be held on Eastern
Normal campus, an ideal location. We
have scanned the program and it is fine.
Call at the Climax office and get one and
see for yourself what good things are in
store. Then "get busy" and talk Chau
tauqua. It is ocb cuautauqua. Don't
forget that. Let's all pull, a long pull,
a pull together, an 1 make it the biggest,
best and most enjoyable week of the

Struck Oil.
C. It, Dulin, of Greencastle, Indiana,
struck a fine flow of oil last week on the
Williams & Maplo 4,000 acre tract of
land, about four miles northeast of Ir
vine. The well is estimated by oil men
to be good for from 10 to 15 barrels per
day. The oil is light green and will test
34 gravity. The well is causing quite a
stir in and . around Irvine. Leases are
being taken on all sides of the well.
Prof. EL. P. Kelly Married.
Prof. E. P. Kelly, well known in this
city, having been connected with Cald
well Ilieh School several years, and
Miss Edwina Lanham, of Knoxville,Ky
were married at the home of the bride
i Wednesday morning, June 10. After a
short bridal triD they will return to
Hawesville, where Prof. Kelly is princi
pal of the high school. Miss Virginia
Murphy, of Louisville, was bridesmaid
and Mr. John Keller, of this city, was
best man.
William Day. said to be formerly of
Breathitt county,' while in a drunken
frenzy at Neon, Letcher county shot
eight persons, one of whom is dead, and
several others of whom are likely to die
Day himself was killed by a posse.
HEARD IN RICHMOND
Opening Ball.
The opening ball of Oil Springs, Clark
county, will be given tomorrow evening.

Mr. Wm. II uls, proprietor of the springs,

Chief of Police Out of Tcwn.
Chief of Police, Capt. D. F. Powers,
left Monday for Grand Uapids, Mich., to
attend the meeting of the International
Association of Chiefs. In his absence
Capt. Jas. Potts will act as Chief. Bet
ter be good, boys; Capt. Jim has his eye
on you. Let's all be good this week, so
Capt. Jim can have a good report to
make to the Chief on his return.

all accounts he will be. a promising con
tender for show ring honors this fall.
This is a great year for saddle horse
stakes. The Iowa and Minnesota State
Fairs offer $1,000 sttkes for the first
time. Shelbyville. Ky., offers $1,500;
Sedalia, Mo., $2,500; Mt. Sterling, Kj.,
$2,000 and the Kentucky State Fair $3,-
000.
As an evidence of how Clydesdales are
appreciated in the country of their ori
gin, one of the big breeders of Scotland
recently paid $10,000 for a nine-months-oU
colt.
In Kentucky silos stand on many
farms. When the hum of the limestone
grinder is heard on the farm that has
also its silo, then indeed is the begin
ning of new and better times for that
farm.

At a sale of American-bred Jerseys
held at Shelbyville by John A. Lee, 100
animals sold for $11,735, or an average
of $118 a head.
NEWS NOTES
The 37th annual meeting of the Ken
tucky Pharmaceutical Association will
be held in Lexington during three days
this week, beginning yesterday.
Over 15,000 women visitors attended
the meeting in Chicago of the General
Federation of Women's Clubs.
Experts believe that Lincoln county
rests over an oil pool equal to the best
in Oklahoma. Drilling was begun last
week.
High School pupils in Lexington earn
ed more than f 10,000 last year by work
done out of school hours. Six earned
more than $300 each.
1 Women wage-earners are growing in
numbers in Great Brittain. For every
five men who earn wages there are two
women who do the same.
Eleven candidates have entered the
race for the Democratic nomination for
Governor of South Carolina to succeed
Cole Blease. It is expected that several
more will announce before the entries
close.
"Let them die" is becomidg the pop
ular slogan in England against the suf
fragettes. To this end a bill may be in
troduced in Parliament to protect all jail
keepers from any damages in allowing
to starve to death any woman who is on
a "hunger strike."
A bill making it a penal offense for
any Cabinet head. Senator or Represen
tative to deliver a lecture for pay was
introduced in the House by Repeesenta
tive Britten, Republican. He attacked
Bryan, La Folliette and Murdock for
their known attitude toward Chautauqua
tours.

McCreary May Open Head

ters in Louisville and now it is said that
Gov. McCreary is contemplating a simi

which time he will speak here, his home
