The occleslastlcal year began last Sunday, tho first Sunday of Advent. Advent la tho Liturgy of the Catho lic church is tho season of prepara tion lor tho festival of Christmas. The cervices of the church during Advent (except on saints' days) are of e penitential character. The Gloria In Excelsls Is not said at mass, tho color of tho sacred vest ments Is purplo or violet, and tho altar Is unadorned. There are four Sunday? In Advent, reminding us of the four thousand yoars of the Old Testament. , Advent means coming, tho coming of tho Saviour of the world, Jesus Christ. During this aeason we prepare for tne great foast of Clirl3tmas, the coming, tho birthday of Jesus. Jesus is God-man nnd Ho was tho desired of nations, tbo Saviour, tho Redeemer of tho world. Let us make use of this holyrseason by performing many acts of devotion and good works and prove ourselves followors of tho Babo of Bethlehem, who will bring us great joy on Christmas. Ernest Akin, pastor-of the First Unitarian church Of this city, has introduced movie pictures aa a drawing card, and tho dally press reports that 800 people, or three and a half times larger than tho usual congregation, wore present Sunday night for tho show. Pastor Akin led his audience in singing 'Tho Long, Long Trail," and "On ward Christian Soldier." Tho feature picture shown was "The Passing of tho Third Floor Back," with Forbes Robertson as the Btar. Tho only disappointing feature was that tho congregation acted like a regular movie audience In trying to hustle out as soon as the picture show was finished. TURN THEM BACK. Preparation for turning tho rall - ways of tho country back to private management at tho beginning of tho year are going forward. The change will not be welcomed In all quarters, but we believe it Is tho wisest thing to do. Two years of experience of government management has served to convince most Impartial observers that private management Is much more efficient. Wo do not dony that Bomo of' tho mismanagement under government control was duo to men who wished to mako out a case against government ownership. They cortalnly succeeded beyond their fondest hopes. tho United States in our own affairs must bo maintained at all costs, nna wo must not bind ourselves to main tain and perpetuate national Injus tices through tho league. If those who drew up tho instrument arc not satisfied with that, wo should stay out of tho league altogether. Thero Is no mistaking now tho at titude of tho country in regard to the proposed League of Nations and tho peace treaty. Even thoso who tvero Btaunchest in supporting tho President's demand for ratification without any reservation aro now ad vocating compromise. If they nro willing to accept tho right kind of compromise they may get it. If not, thoy must face outright defeat. Wo should dislike to see tho treaty made a political issuo in tho next campaign. Wo havo domestic prob lems enough, without dragging in this overshadowing issue. If tho Democrats aro wise thoy will keep it out, for tho decision on it has already been reached by tho pooplo of America. Better a thousand times no League of Nations and no treaty of peace, declares the Truo Voice, than tho treaty that Mr. Wil son brought back from Europe and tried to forco on tho country. From that tho courageous action of tho Senate has saved us. Tho country wants no mora of it. Allon, arrived during her stay to gladden tho hearts of tho young parents. Mr. and Mrs. Daniel B. Since tho signing of tho armistice, last November, the soft coal miners of tho country havo averaged twenty-two hours work a week. This waa not the fault of tho miners. We do not know with certainty -that It was tho fault of the operators. But vhAm la stwnfethinir wrong In an Industry whoro this condition Is possible. Tho miners' demand for a thirty-hour week does not seem unreasonable when It Is understood that tho men are asking for more work and Increased production. We Buspect that increased production is just what tho operators don't want. SEEKING A COJITROMISE. By tho death of Philip KIndgen SU Vincent do Paul's parish loses another of Its respected members.
