English settlement in America was
made at Jamestown and It Is pro
posed that the tercentennlal of this
I event shall bo celebrated next year
from May 1 to November I Elaborate

prospects are bright for the holding
of a successful exposition

News Hampton and the Government
Reserve Fortress Monroe
The site selected is the most his
toric portion of American territory
Tho first settlement was at James
town Island about 30 miles from Nor
folk up the James river but on
account of the convenient transporta
tion facilities It was decided to hold
the exposition at the most suitable
point near Jamestown where the mag

acres of land and about 280 acres

on Hampton Roads near Norfolk

from Portsmouth The exposition will
have four miles of water front There
Is to be a great military drill ground
30 miles across it There is to be
a canoe trail two miles long run
ning from Brush creek through the
most interesting part of the Exposi
tion grounds A romantic winding
footpath called Flirtation wark Is
to follow the canoe trail for a mile
or so There probably never has
been an exposition planned whose nat
ural advantages even approximated
those of the sl tq for this one
The grand piers already mentioned
are to extend 2400 feet into Hampton
Roads from the exposition grounds
They are to be 800 foot wide and
connected by a cross pier 1200 feet
long at a distance of 2400 feet from
shoro inclosing a magnificent grand
basin 280 acres in extent
The exposition will be mainly his
torical and educational emphasizing
events of national interest illustra
tive of tho principles of religious so
cial political and economic independ
once first expressed at Jamestown and
later established by tho fouaders of
our government
It is not the intention to feature
industrial displays as at the worlds
fair expositions at Chicago and St
LouisThere
There will be gonaraus displays of
the arts and crafts fi hones army
and navy appliances transportation
and states exhibits and the exposi
tion will be the first one ever con
structed which will illustrate a dis
tinctive style of architecture It will
be entirely colonial All of the build
ings erected by the exposition com
pany will be replicas of seventeenth
century structures or elaborations of
them The conce lon division

ment enterprises possible to secure
