OFFICIAL MINUTES OF THE MEETING I
Mass meeting of South Christian
county farmers representing more
than one million pounds of tobacco
waS held at Longview school house
on Saturday afternoon at 1 oclock
pm and the tobacco situation con
sidered It was decided in view of
the general dissatisfaction with the
associations system of selling that
some action must be taken that it
was not best that decisive steps be
taken by this local meeting but that
a mass meeting be held at Hopkins
villein the court house on Saturday
the 13th at 1 oclock that every to
bacco grower in Christian and ad
joini g counties make every sacrifice
neary to be present that they I

evolve some plan to preserve the
association and make it satisfactory
to the tobacco growers
Everybody from the various
bootleggers to the Christian county
executive committee is directly in

shall we continue the association if

WHAT THE MEETING AT THE COURT
HOUSE ON THE 13TH IS FOR
We believe the present sys
tem of selling tobacco as adopted by
the association to be the most per
nicious and injurious possible to the
farmers that it has discouraged the
tobacco growers and is disorganizing
the association that we advise the
executivecommittee to at oqce call
a special meeting and adopt some
system that will dispel distrust and
discord and prevent dissolution that
unless this action is taken at once it
Iis the opinion of this body that it
will be too late to remedy the breach
already made in our ranks
IIWe also urge the other counties
and communities interested in the
growth of dark tobacco to promptly
take such action as they deem best
for the general welfare That in this
way we may save the association and
an inheritance handed down by our
fathers and forefathers for more
than 100 years
We believe thay4nj holding this
meeting lye will ave done what we
could to hold the association togeth
er that this meeting has been held
that everybody interested in thii
subject may take a hand in this ef
fort to place the association upon a

PRECINCT MEETINGS FOR TODAY
r
To the farmers of Christian Co
In my opinion you are facing a
most serious situation in your gen
eral affairs and a most critical one
in the affairs of your County Organ
ization of the Planters Protective
AssociationI
I am impelled to say this and to
write the following by the open
manifestation of disloyalty to al
most defiance of the Association by
a number of farmers of Longview
precinct and adjacent thereto last
Saturday afternoon
To you men who took part in that
meeting and who contemplate fur
ther promotion of the purposes of
that meeting 1 wish to make this
one more and last appeal to your
common sense and sense of right
and justice toward your fellow far
I mers The question naturally presents
itself What is the object of your
meeting and what will be its effect
if successful
successfulAfter
After a long plain talk with one I
I of your number Dr Austin Bell I
understand that you demand of Mr
l Ewing or the Association that the
Association sell your tobacco loose
3or that you be released from your
planL
L is offered by which the Association
can sell Christian county tobacco
oI
loose none is offered And when I
ask if you people are willing to wait
tf
till the Association can dispose of
the tobacco even loose at the Asso
ciation price I am told it is very
doubtful that you want to sell im
mediately
No gentlemen it seems plain to
me that your wish and your purpose
is one of two things 1stTo dis
rupt the Association by starting a
movement to disregard your pledges
and sell every man for himself or
2ndTo let the Association continue
to exist and hold up prices while

J believe every one of you is too
good a business man not to believe
deep down in your Heart that it
would be a great calamity to this
country to destroy the organization
tlfe cooperation of the farmers
By means of this organization
Dr John Bell told me in the pres
presence
was delighted with the sale of his
1907 crop L L Leavell in the same
presence told me the same thing
Where is your kick gentlemen
Dr Austin Bell told me he was
not dissatisfied with the prices he
had gotten I feel sure Holland Gar
nett would say the same thing
Do you really believe you can
make more money out of raising to
bacco without cooperation among
farmersI
I know you will not admit that you
want to reap the benefits of selling I
outside while the Association mem
bers carry the burden of holding up
pricesAnother
Another thing why is it that
Longview precinct in the main and
those adjacent thereto should ob
ject most strenuously to the hard
ships incident to the maintenance of
prices when it is without doubt the
richest section of Christian county
while at the same time we have in
various less rich sections solid mass
es of people doing all they can to
uphold the Association in its efforts
Truly gentlemen it seems to me
that you are making a mistake or
else you have a very selfish motive
I have the kindliest feeling for
you and claim many of you as my
personal friends and I entreat you
to pause and consider well what you
doAnd
And now to the farmers in general
First I would say dont lose sight of
the fact that the farmers make up
the Association Each one of you is
an integral part of it Without your
active cooperation Mr Ewing the
Board of Directors and the county
committee can do nothing for they
will have nothing to do with Dont
deceive yourself into thinking that
all of you can sell your tobacco on
the outside but still Mr Ewing etc
will hold up prices for you
