A Fake Story
Ifll tIJi n d n 171 t
The statement has been pub
lished broadcast that after a cer
tain date it would be unlawful
fora person to give a check for
less than 1 and the penalty for
the offense i was a fine of not
< less than 50 nor more than 500
lThe statement created a storm
1of protest The following state
ment has been issued by the of
ficials of the United States Treas
ury Department concernin the
matter There is no law which
stops a man or woman from
writing a cneck for less than a
dollar despite reports to that
effect A number of inquiries
have been received at the De
partment regarding a statement
that there was such a provision
in the penal code about to go in
to effect The law governing
the subject instead of being a
new one was enacted backin
the sixties and has never been
r
construed to apply to checks on
deposits Its purpose is to pre
Vent the circulation of private
paper as lawful money itself

The country is heartily con
gratulating itself over crop pros
Pacts Secretary Wilson has
been giving out some crop pro
phecies lately that are stunners
He predicts that the total of crop
values this year will break the
record When it is remembered
that the value of the crops pro
duced last year reached the
huge total of 7778000000 it
will be seen that one must almost
IIgo into the sphers of higher ma
thematics to figure out what the
Secretary is talking about His
statement means that this years

The value of the corn crop
alone last year was 1615000

statement it would pay the inter

States would pay for the Pana

fifty battleships of the Dread

one of the great crops of the
American farmI
If anything were wanting to
