The New Beautitudes.
The anti-preparedness commi'
tee has given out a "new version
of the-beautitudes, according to
the 'preparedness' school of
metrpolitan preachers. "
The text is by the Rev. John
Haynes Holmes, of the Church
of the Messiah, New York City,
and reads as follows:
"Blessed are the proud in
spirit for theirs is the kingdom
of earth."
"Blessed are they that mourn.
for they shall be pensioned."
"Blessed are the mighty, for
they shall inherit the earth."
"Blessed are they that hunger
and thirst after preparedness,
for they shall be drilled."
"Blessed are the merciless, for
they shall obtain victory."
"Blessed are the sure in heart,
for they shall steal God."
"Blessed are the war-makers,
for they shall be called tfie cham
pions of God."
"Blessed are they that are
conscripted for preparedness'
sake, for theirs is the kingdom
of earth."

What Next?
With Villa dead (?). his ban
dits punished, and our troops re
turned, what next? Th'ere are
still Villaistas, more bandits, and
dangers along the border. There
will be probability of trouble
just as long as there are unset
tled conditions in Mexico. In
view of this fact can the United
States afford to withdraw its
forces from the border can it
afford to be unprepared? These
are the questions now to be an
swered, and in such way as to
emphasize the impression our
troops have made in Mexico. A
Mexican paper says: "The Grin
goes live, eat and sleep in the
saddle."
The United States has won
some respect from the Mexicans.
It might win more. It certainly
must not lose what it has gained,
though it be compelled to keep
every available man on the bor
der. But the United States can
not now turn its punitive expe
dition into an army of interven
tion without stultifying itself in
the opinion of the . whole conti
nent, and those who advocate oc
cupation fail to realize this fact.
The United States may be deal
ing with Mexico but its methods
are carefully scrutinized by ev
ery American republic whose
bonds of sympathy with Mexico
are stronger than their relations
with this republic The Grit.
Mae Murray, beautiful Lasky
Paramount star, is getting ac
quinted with Southern Califor
nia. In the three months that
she has been here, Miss Murray
has not had a day's vacation, ex
cepting an occasional Sunday.
Since the conclusion of her fust
picture, however, she has motor
ed to San Diego and is now tak
ing little trips about the country.
Supporting Fannie Ward and
Jack Dean in the new Lasky pro
duction for the Paramount Pro
gram, now being directed by
George Melford are James Neill,
Gertrude Kellar, Billy Elmer,
Lucien Littlefield and several
other prominent members of the
Lasky Company. The play is
from a story by Willard Mack.
The department of Justice is
investigating the increased price
of gasoline with the view of in
stituting proceedings against the
producers.

Marie Doro, Lasky-Paramount
star, is now taking time to dec
orate her new home. Miss Doro
and her husband, Elliott Dexter,
have taken one of the show
places of Hollywood, and are at
present supervising the re plant
ing of the garden.
George W. Peck, former Gov
ernor of Wisconsin, died at his
home in Milwaukee. He was
the author of "Peck's Bad Boy"
and was a noted speaker against
Prohibition.
Miss Lucy May Jones, heir to
$100,000 was killed by her brother-in-law,
James Perkins, near
Washington, Ind. Perkins af
terwards killed himself with a
razor.
Warrants were sworn out in
Louisville for three men arrested
in Chicago charged with being
the persons who blew open the
safe in the Equitable Building.
The Rev. W. H. Harvey, of
Webster county, is 3oon to make
an address to his home people
giving an account of his steward
ship at Frankfort.
