CO., Peace in Sight. Ambassador Gerard's hopeful view of the situation will be pleasing to as many persons in Christendom as can find any ground for sharing his hopes. If peace were possible to Ger many upon a basis of "the war map as it stands" Germany would be glad to make peace terms. She would be left in pos session of considerable territory acquired during the war, and her alliance with Turkey would be profitable to her plans of an expansion of the empire east ward. But it is in conceivable that she could secure peace en anything like those terms. That would mean the desertion of Bel gium, Poland and Serbia by the Allies, and the course would be not only inconsistent, in view of the fact among others that Great Britian went into the war osten sibly to uphold Belgium, but it would also be folly from the standpoint of military strategy. Germany with the opening she would have would soon become the most powerful of the Euro pean nations and woulcKneed no European alliance other than that with Austria to further de velop her strength at the ex pense of the present Allies. If peace is in sight, it must be peace based on the surrender of acquired territory by Germany. And unless Germany is al the point of exhaustion as many ob servers believe she is there will be no surrender of what has been gained. State Journal. Clear Skin Comes From Within. Admirable in length aod in purpose, even if without especial distintion as an example of Sen atorial prose, the speech will go far toward popularizing the new Hoosier Senator.
