Kentucky -Where She Stands. . Let's put "Kentucky where she be longs. There has been too much of this "flne-horses-prett.y womeu-good-whiskey" talk for the good of the State. Even a great majority of we Kentuckians don't know how high our Commonwealth ranks with other States Here are" a 'few facts that possibly you didn't know: Kentucky has the largest white pop ulation of any State south ofthe Ohio river. Seventy-live per cent of its popula tion is rural. There are more people in Kentucky worth $5,000 and over, and more witli incomes of 32.500 per vear and over than in any State in the South. Kentucky leads ail States in" the Union in thoroughbred horses, in to bacco, hemp and sorghum cane. Our tobacco crop in 1915 was 360,000,000 pounds, more than one-third of the total crop of America Kentucky-ranks fifth in the produc tion of coal. Kentucky is the tenth State in the' production of corn, showing last year a yield of over 115,000,-000 bushels. There are nearly 15,000,000 bearing fruit trees in Kentucky, and last year Kentucky was the seventh State in th Union in the productiorTbf apples our crop being 12,500,000 worth to the producer seventy -on e'eents per bushel. There are more registered Jersey cattle in Shelby county, Ky 7' than in any county in any "State in America. The value of farm property in Ken tucky is over 8800,000,000, being larger than that of any other State in the South Among the States south of the Ohio river Kentucky leads in the produc tion of dairy and beef cattle, horses, poultry, sheep and wool. It leads al so in corn, wheat and tobacco, and comes second in hay and potatoes. There are more silos in Kentucky than in all the other States of the Central South put together. In 1914 there were registered in Kentucky only 8,750 automobiles. Today the registration is over 30.000. There were twenty-two States in the Union last year that produced farai products valued at over $100, 000,000, Kentucky was one of these. Kentucky leads all States of the South, in its total poultry products, that is, eggs and fowls. Kentucky also leads the South in the purchase and use of farm imple ments and machinery. -E-Town News. Danger Signal. If the fire bell should rind would you run and stop it or go and help to put out the fire? It is much the same way with a coug. A cough is a dan ger signal as much as a fire bell. This cau nearly always be done by taking Chamberlain'sCough Remedy. Many have use it with the most-beneficial results. The New Revenue Bill. The new revenue bill, prepared by the State Tax Commission and given to the public on Monday, is a measure that will raise sufficient money to meetrall the expenses of the State and in a few years will furnish sufficient funds, to retire the present deficit. The measure, in addition to meeting the-pressing demands of the State, in creases by more than a million dollars annually the revenues of the state, without any unjust or unfair burdens upon any class of property. It decreases the rate on real aDd personal property from 55 cents on the hundred dollars to 40 cents on the hundred dollars and provides fcr a more equitable assessment so that this character of property -will yield as much or more revenue than the state is now receiving from the highest rate. The placjng of the same rate on in tangible property to the state and re leasing it from county and municipal taxes is the principal revenue produc ing feature of the measure. It will will lead to the voluntary assessment """ 'te kind of property in the will increase the taxes re-et.-etffrom this source from about 8100,000 to J$1,000,000. The penalties are made so severe for the failure to list this character of property that it makes ii a financial blunder upon the part of the owner not to list. -The tax of ten cents on bank depos its will also be a great teveuue pro ducer, without any hardship, as the banks in the most cases will elect to pay them trusting the large addition in deposits because they are free from individual taxes for cash on hand to largely increase their deposits so that in most cases it will be a .money mak ing proposition to them. The News has r9asou to feel good over the bill as framed by the Tax Commission, as it is written along the lines and embraces fundamentally ev .eryprinciple for which we have con tended in discussing this vital ques tion We can, of course, see uo reason why the nress of the State should not most heartily approve the measure. With public sentiment behind it, an extra sessioifof the Legislature would undoubtedly adopt it E-Town News. Sloan's Liniment Eases Pain. Some of the most' practical railroad companies of the "East and West have agreed to appeal to the courts against the Adamson 8 hour law. They claim that Congress went beyond its proper "police powers" to pass this law. The railroads are "common carriers." and can be regulated almost any way tha government may deem proper. If Congress' can tell the railroads how much they shall charge for carrying passengers and freight, and how many men shall, be employed to run a train, and wharkind of cars and vhat kind of brakes shall be used, and what kind of heating apparatus shall warm the cars, and how much profit tile roads shall be allowed to earn, one would think, that Congress could also fix the hours of labor and rate of 'pay.
