James Rickels accidentally shot
himself Saturday evening with a
22 rifle and for some time it was
thought that the wound might
prove fatal He had been out in
the woods and took the gun with
him Returning home he went to
the usual place to hang it up but
not being securely fastened fell
discharging the gun the ball
entering the right side of the
abdomen Fortunately the ball
passed around instead of going
straight in and was removed Sun
day by Drs Southard and
Lawrence and since then the
patient has been doing very nicely
He is now thought to be entirely
out of danger
No one was present with Mr
Rickles when the accident
occurred his wife being with her
parents Mr and Mrs Boone near
Maywood Mrs Rickels came
home Sunday
Nath Bussel and James Jones
I who were arrested a few days
since by deputy sheriffs T J
Nicley and G S Griffin charged
with taking goods from the stores
of Mat Mink Wesley Mink and
I Harve Mink waived the right of
examination Wednesday and we re
held over till the December term
of the Circuit Court on a bond of
000 each which they failed to
g e A part of the missing goods
were found at Bussels home and a
part at the home of Jones The
defendants claim they bought the
goods but we are told that Jones
has already made two different
statements one that he bought his
goods from R A WhIt ebead and another
notherthat he bought them from a
clerk whose name he did not give
I Whether the parties are guilty or
not they are confronted with a
I most serious charge and having
the goods in their possession
makes the evidence pretty strong
There has been entirely too much
stealing going on in the county
for the past few months an < J of all
people to be feared it is the
thief and second the liar
LATER Jones realizing that he
is up against it and that the easiest
way out is the best tells the
whole story He says that he and
Bussel robbed Harve Minks store
three times and Wesley Minks
store twice and that they also stole
two sides of meat from one of the
Pitmans He also incriminates
Tobe Carpenter He said that one
of the times when he and Bussel
I robbed Harve Minks store Car
I penter was along and held their
horses while they did the work I
for which they gave him one of
the five sacks of flour which they
I got It seem that Bussel 4s
recognied as the main leader and
I since his arrest numerous thefts
which have been committedJn that
section of the county are being
charged to him f s

Many country merchants who
fail in business or cannot make
money attribute it to the fact that
their people wont give them their
patronage but send their money
to mail order houses in the cities
and frequently get no better
I bargains than if they had spent
their money at home It will not
be disputed that large sums of
money are sent every week
month and year to these foreign
concerns and that none of it never
comes back This condition of
things works Injury to horns
merchants The statement is made
that R W Sears a mail order man
of Chicago and only forty five
years of age has just retired from
i business with a fortune of 25000
I 000 He made this vast sum in
seventeen years This collossal
fortune was made at the expense
of hundreds and thousands of small
merchants in all parts of the
country How much money did
Mr Sears ever contribute to help
keep upa church or a school
house in Kentucky or in any other
state fiotn which ht reaped such a
rick harvest Ex
