At that primary I was denied a single election officer, challenger or inspector in either Rockcastle or Pulaski Counties, and was the victim of much other fraud and unfairness, as the result of which the small majority of two hundred and seventy one votes was counted against me in the district. But rather than imperil the chances of the Republican State Ticket which stood for election that year, I submitted to all of this and declined to wage a contest which I have no doubt would have resulted m my being declared the nomi nee. My opponent has now held this office six years longer, making in all twelve years, and has drawn more than S 50,000 00 in salary from it. And back of that he was Commonwealth's Attorney &c. Now he is asking you for a third term as Circuit Judge which would make eighteen years in that office. I am asking you for a first term. I do not believe that long tenure in office results in good to the people. A change once in n while is helpful. Six years ago you were urged not to swap horses in the middle of the stream. Now you are again very solemnly given the sanu mlviss. I am afraid we are staying to long in the stream. It was a real pleasure last week to renew old a-quaintances and make new ones in your splendid county. You huvt- u'.ways treated me very kindly and nicely, and I shall ever hnvea warm place in my heart for the good people of Rockcastle County. I earnestly hope that this race shall he free from bitterness; that there shall be no mud slinging or newspaper slush. All I ask is a clean, fair primary at which eveiy Rtiubliccinoter flmll te peirr.it ted to vote as they desire and have their votes counted as cast. If one illegal vote would make me Circuit Judge I would decline it. I amcoming among you from time to time and hope we shall know each other better as the months go by. And I want each indi vidual voter in Rockcastle County to knowjthat I shall greatly appre ciate your vote and influence. And if nominated and elected, as I honestly believe I shall be by nn overwhelming majority, I pledge myself to make the District such a fair, just and impartial judge that you will never have cause to regret having voted for me.
