the righteousness of his cause the
redemption of Kentucky from the

I has done while chairman of tho
Democratic Campaign Committee
to get into ollico and throwing
them down I am most seriously
and unrelentingly opposed to in
temperance whether in tho man
who parades as a temperance re
former or in the victims of the
habit of temptation 1 believe that
it is necessary to guard against
tho great evils which have followed
the opening of saloons on Sunday
when thousands of workingmcn
illtrained in self control and unre
strained in their daily work with
their weeks wages in their pock
I etc spend in dissipation thousands
of dollars needed by their wives
and families and Jill tho police
courts every Monday morning I
with scores of cases costing the
I
Commonwealth hundreds of oJ
lars paid by the tax money of tho
people
I That tho temperance o question is
a vital issue in the present cam
paign cannot bo gainsaid 51111 tho
Democratic gung with 1111of its
adroitness in the game of politics
cannot blindfold tho people of their
belief that is tho supreme issue
tho only issue demanding attention
on the part of voters There arc
others of equal moment and can
not bo dodged as eager as Demo
crats would have them slighted
A political thief or robber is but
a shadc more respectable than tho
pickpocket I have but a little
speck more confidence in Ule one
than Ithavp in tho other One
robs you of both your money and
honor tho other robs you of but I
your money Well after taking I
the second thought I believe the
pickpocket is tho safest man i1
whom to impose confidence and
in the last analysis it is unwiso I
and unsafe to trust either What
is the record of Beckhara and f Ia
