ZACK tf- A DANGER A danger that confronts the Unit ed States is that the force of public opinion aroused by a jingo press of no, judgment may carry the Admin istration from its safe base and pre cipitate war "with Germany. With a man "of the iron nerve and courage of Woodrow Wilson in command the danger is remote, it is true, but it is; a danger just the same. This country is not prepared for "war. It will require several years to bring (ho country on a basis in any degree oqual to that of European countries now fighting. It is perhaps true thnt Germany has a system of spies covering tho United States who are bcttcrj acquainted with the country's -war footing than are tho citizens of tho country themselves. Perhaps it is true also that there aro over two million German reservists in this country who could be relied on to take up tho causo of tho Fatherland in the event of a rupture. Germany is likewise buying and storing am munition and other war supplies here, perhaps to use against us.. All this may be true and it counts. It may bo well for citizens to hio. them selves to camps like that at Platts burg, N. Y., and enter upon military training. It will at least be good for tho tired business man's health. As a matter of fact, thoy havo tho WHOLE SITUATION before them and know exactly what they are doing and what the conn try ought to do: The vast majority of our people havo confidence in the Administration, and believe it should be left unhampered to work out its delicate probloms. If left alone there enn be no doubt ol a correct solution of every difficulty. So for as we are concerned, there fore, nobody can scare us o work up a war frenzy in this neighbor hood until Woodrow Wilson gives notice thnt there are breakers ahead. PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES IN VACCINATING HOGS When Mhutcx or pigs nro hcnvily infested with worms, vaccination ' J may result in considerable loss.; Hogs thnt nrc excessively fat arc not ns good risks for vaccination as animals in medium condition. Farmers must provide proper care of hogs before nnd after treatment to reduce tho risk to n minimum. Many of tho undesirable results fol lowing vaccination arc due to the condition of the hogs, or to tho sur roundings under- which they are kept. These factors nrc in u ma jority -of instnnees under the control of tho owner. The following points in hog man agement should ho carefully consid ered : 1. Ascertain beyond n doubt whether or not cholera is present in the herd. 2. Animals stand the excitement nnd shock of vaccination better if the intestinal tract is empty; if free from parasites; if in medium flesh; if kept cool during the operation and confined in n clean, disinfected stall, bedded with straw while awaiting the injection of scrum. 3. The point of inoculation must bo thoroughly cleaned and disinfect ed. The 'animals must not be nllow ed access to dirty, filthy wallows bc-1 fore or after treatment. It is im possible to clean a dirty hog with a small amount of nntiseptic so that semm can be injected with any de gree of cleanliness. Abscesses arc most often the results of tho lUthi ncss of the hogs nnd not to any fault of ' the operator who employs proper precautions with his syringe nnd serum, 4. There must be a clean, dust free enclosure for -the hogs at the time of inoculation. 5. Following .vuccination hogs must bo kept in clean quarters for at least two days. Dirty wallows should be avoided. A good plan is i to keep hogs in a well bedded stable. The feed should be laxative in nature. Losses sometimes follow vaccinntion in the winter months because ani mals aro placed in damp, filthy quarters. C. Great care is employed in pre- j paring pure, potent serum. There . . mQ rigk ;n ;nj-cct;n? ROoi serum into hogs that are properly prepared for tho operation and properly cared for followign it. In summing up the factors which contribute to irregularities, it has been observed thut in a great many herds tho owner is negligent in pro viding tho care necessary before and j after treatment, especially those es- IsenUais herein mentioned.
