position in the Bank of Kentucky in
that city This same position was
previously offered to him but was re
fused at that time owing to its inter
ference with his studies and the rep
etition of the offer is a deserved com
pliment to his character
For Stealing Otto Schmitt was
on Thursday morning tried before
Squire McDonald for robbing the
baggage of boarders at the Hotel
Freeman and held over to the April
term of the circuit court in the sum
of 200 failing to give which he was
remanded to jail
Delivery Wagon Mr Jas Hee
ney on Wednesday received a new
delivery wagon made by Mr J B
Hamilton which is a hoauty Mr
Heeney does not confine himself to
the ornamental in business however
but in addition has all the useful
things in the grocery line at the low
est market prices
Proposed Hops The Liedorkranz
Society will give a hop on the eve
ning of Easter Monday and the Inde
pendent Grapevine Club will also
give one shortly after the close of

Grey John Dead The fire boys
are in mourning Grey John the best
norse in the department is dead
The old fellow has had frequent spells
of illness during the last year or two
which lasted only a few days but he
was taken down on Thursday and
notwithstanding ho had the attention
of Dr Sprengle the skillful veteri
nary and the boys worked manfully
to save him he died that night
The Watterson Special The
special train of the Watterson Demo
cratic Club en route for Washington
to witness the inauguration passed
through this city as a second section
to the F F V Limited on Thursday
It was a splendid train and the mem
bers of the club and their guests will
have no complaint to make on that
score

Quito a number of officers of the
Kentucky Stato Guard met in this
city on Wednesday and Thursday
andformed anu0fflcer8 Association
The principal subject of discusalon
after organization was the encamp
ment next summer and it was unani
mously decided to hold tat Chicago
beginning August 4th if the neces
sary funds could be secured Gover
nor Brown informed the association
that there was not enougli money to
the credit of the State guard to pay
for the trip but as it would cost
only about 2000 more in all to hold
it at Chicago than at some point
in this State he did not doubt the
Legislature would appropriate an
amount sufficient to enable the pro
jest to be carried out It was Anally
decided to ask the Legislature to
make such an appropriation and
after discussing other subjeots of
interest to the State Guard the asso
ciation adjourned
Among the higher officers present
were Colonels Castleman Barrett
Smith Gaither and Graham Major
Watt Adgt Gen Gross Assj Adgt
Gen Richardson and nearly all the
regimental officers of the 2d regi
ment besides the Captain or a Lieu
tenant from most of the companies
of the State
Preparing to Move Out
The Mason Foard Company
broke ground yesterday for the foun
dation of a large warehouse one
hundred and fifty feet long by seventy-five
wide on their lot near the
Kentucky Midland yards The work
will be pushed right along so as to
have the building in readiness to
receive their large stock of chairs on
the first of May as they expect to
give up their lease on the prison
labor about that time
They have already begun shutting
down labor in the shops within the
walls and will shortly begin the
orection of buildings on outside of the
prison into which they will remove
their valuable machinery and con
tinue the manufacure of chairs with
free labor

Massie who received a life sentence
for the murder of Jesse Honaker in
Owen county which was afterwards
reversed by the Court of Appeals
was removed Tuesday from the jail
in this county where he has been
confined for safe keeping to Owenton
to stand trial again

ed a place with Mr E M Williams
the South Side coal dealer Mr
Payne is a popular and efficient clerk
whose engagement with Mr Williams
will doubtless have a tendency to in
crease that gentlemans business
