'? ' 'm ,., -- Vf "? . r FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 1919. ' i TME BOVIBOX SEWS, PAJU1, UJTUUJH !!. FOOTBALL IS ANCIENT SPORT V ?agx imam X V J LETTERS FROM BOURBON COUNTY SOLDIERS AND SAILORS i i For the first time in a long while THE NEWS has received a communi cation from genial Andrew Jackson Turney, formerly of Paris, who is still in France as a member of the American Expeditionary Forces. Jack indites an interesting epistle as follows in his usual bree2y way: "Labienville, France, Jan. 14. "Dear NEWS: "As blue Monday has passed and the doctor has mark ed me 'quarters for the day, I want to try to find out how these days of peace agree with you. The name of the German barracks we now occupy is 'The Bucket of Blood," so called because Kentucky boys are the sole occupants. .. .We have learned one thing, and that is, dynapiite caps thrown in a hot stove will cause some explosion, the result of which is that awo of our boys are in the hos pital, (Louisville boys, by the way.) A part of the stove, judging from the direction it took when it left here, ought by this time to be near ing the junk yards of Munich & Wides. (See, this shows I read THE BOURBON NEWS) We have also found out that a cross-cut saw was made to saw wood with, and that in case of cold weather you had better grab hold of one end if you want a fire (-no Henry Cavanaugh to make that fire and say, 'Man, are you go ing to get up?) "Rainy weather greets us daily, so the sunshine you have in Kentucky would look good to me, as the French girls and the champagne we have here would look to the beache lora in your office. Never thought I would get tired of either, but guess the damp weather has changed me. White mule a-nd cognac are found in some of the towns, and, as boys will be boys, I nerved myself up to try it the other night. Instead of getting up for breakfast formation, I found myself absent frcfm all forma tions. I know so little to have all the opportunities I have had, and am anxious to see if it will have the same effect the second time. "Have had great luck in receiving my mail, and among the choicest parcels I find the BOURBON NEWS, which I have read from 'kiver to kiver' and never missed a line. . . . The last main topic I will mention is our departure. From all indications we will ride the water about the last of February. But we hear so many different stories, and the exact date of our leaving here would be very hard to state .... Hope this will find all the good people of old Bourbon county well. She has certainly given her best to the boys over here. "Looking forward joyfully to the time when we can all be together and join in a free-for-all conversa tion, and in which I will be able to tell you of some of the wonderful and exciting (?) experiences I have had over here, I hope to remain, with my best wishes, "Yours, as of old, "ANDREW JACKSON TURNEY." 'Tape's Cold Compound" Ends Cold or Grippe in a Few Hours a Wat Popular Among the Old Romans and Also Found Somt Favor With the Florentines. Can you Imagine Julius Caesar play ing quarterback on the Rome univer sity eleven, or Brutus skirting the ends in those days when the forum was as busy as a three-ring circus? No? Nev ertheless It was a probability, for it appears now that football originated with the RomnnB. A few uneducated persons used to think that football was of Greek in vention; but Trench and Campus trained news hounds, aided by Italian propagandists, have fastened It on Rome. The Romans, not really know ing that It was football, called it "cal cium." It appears to have been a goodly, rough-going game, full of spirit, feet and broken elbows, played more on the soccer order than the Rugby style in common favor. With the fall of the Roman empire "calcium" also fell out of the spot light, not to appear In favor until the time of the Florentines and their. Medlcis. There Is no record of Ma chiavelli having participated in the games, but we imagine that if he did he played a foxy, clever game. Gio vanni de Bardi, a well-known Floren tine newspaper man, wrote as follows in 1580: "The calcio (later name) is a public game played between two 'groups of young men on foot, not armed, who playfully compete In making a ball, by means of their feet, pass outside of a certain line back of the opposite group. The ball is-medlocre in size, filled with wind, and the game is played purely for the honor of winning.' CATALONIA GREAT SEA POWER Your cold will break and all grippe misery end after taking a dose of 'Tape's Cold Compound" every two hours until three doses are taken. Don't stay stuffed up! Quit blow ing and snuffling! Ease your throb bing head nothing elBe in the world gives such prompt relief as "Pape's Cold Compound," which costs only a few cents at any drug store. Spanish Province Centuries Ago Held Undisputed Naval Sway People Still Proud of Achievements. The Moors were expelled from Bar celona in the ninth century. Catalonia had more than four centuries' start over Seville and six over Malaga. It is little wonder, therefore, that Span ish enterprise, if such a term is ap plicable, is seen at its best In Cata lonia, because It has had a real oppor tunity to express Itself. Catalonia has always looked beyond Its geographical limits. It has, in fact, looked sea ward. It was on the waves that the men of Barcelona found riches and glory. They were he rivals of the Plsans. Genoese and Venetians, and Barcelona can boast of a naval his tory as great perhaps as theirs. Cata lonia for a time held sway of the sea, and it was only upon the consolidation of Spain at the beginning of the six teenth century and the rise of the great modern states that the city was eclipsed as a sea power. The Cata lonians, proud olf their achievements, looked with little favor upon Colum- bus' discovery of America, an enter prise,, which had been promoted by neighboring Castile.
